The Riverton Elementary School in Portland has a scholastic chess club that meets Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The coaches at the club, Jon Malev, Fred Fowler and Frank Smith, are looking for people to get involved teaching chess. This would be a fine opportunity for chess-playing seniors to pass on their skills to young people. If you are interested please contact Frank Smith at (207) 772-7057.

We are pleased to announce the Maine Chess Player of the Year competition for 2011. Players will receive one point for each game played including any full point byes, players will also receive points from their tournament score (half point byes will not count). In order to be eligible for the Maine Chess Player of the Year competition, a player must be a MECA member. Membership rates are listed in the About MECA link on ChessMaine.net.

On Saturday, January 29th the Deer Isle-Stonington Chess Boosters sponsored the 5th Annual Joe Brown Memorial Tournament for K-8 chess players. Joe's mother Jenny and his two sisters Whitney and Chelsea were on hand to give out the awards in four divisions: K-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8. Thirty-two young chess players were on hand to honor Joe's memory with some memorable chess matches. Dan DeLuca from Aurora donated his time coming down to Deer Isle to direct the event for the 5th year in a row.

Thirteen Maine chess players competed in the thirty-eight player five round Portsmouth Open on January 15-16, 2011. The open section of the event was won by GM Alexander Ivanov with 4.5 points. Matthew Fishbein was the highest scoring Maine player with 3.5 points. His performance rating of 2221 added forty-five points to his quickly-rising USCF Class A rating. We bring you games, images and results.

Forty-seven players competed in the 12th Annual MLK Day Chess Tournament held at the Stillwater Montessori School in Old Town on Monday, January 17th. Steve Abrahams took first in the open section with 4.0 points, Josh Audibert won the K-12 section (which was merged with the open), Bethany Humphrey went unbeaten and untied in the K-8 section and Dhari Al-Shamari and Catherine Rudnicki shared equal first in the K-6 section with perfect scores. Over one hundred scholastic chess players gathered at Ellsworth Middle School on Thursday, January 13th for nearly two hours of all-play-all open chess at the K-8 Open Chess Day organized and directed by Deer Isle-Stonington chess coach Dick Powell. This is the second of three such gatherings (the next being on February 28th) that provide an opportunity for players to sharpen their games in preparation for the scholastic state championship tournaments held at the University of Maine in Orono in March.

Voting has been completed for the four Board of Director seats on the Maine Chess Association's Policy Board. The top four vote getters have been elected to serve a one-year term, effective Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2011. The new Policy Board consists of: Steve Abrahams (Bangor), Philip Lowell (Portland), Jon Malev (Scarborough) and Brian Roderick (Chelsea).

Twenty-eight chess players competed in three sections at the 2011 edition of the John Bapst New Year's Tournament played at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor on Sunday, January 2nd. The tournament is a fundraiser for a possible trip to the high school national championships in the spring. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstable and a very entertaining game played by two former high school rivals.
