Deer Isle-Stonington Chess Player Henry Penfold Named Valedictorian

Congratulations to Deer Isle-Stonington High School senior Henry Penfold on receiving the school's valedictorian honor. Henry is a longtime member of the Deer Isle-Stonington Chess Team, National Honor Society, Student Council, and participated in cross country, theatre, tennis, band, Eco Club, and Math Team. Henry will be studying marine biology at Bodoin College this fall.

Mainers at 90th Massachusetts Open

Five Mainers competed in the 90th Massachusetts Open played on Memorial Day weekend in Westford, Massachusetts: Wyatt Hendrix and Aaron Spencer in the Championship section, Will Ravn in the U2100, Hayden Tittle in the U1800, and Sam Silberstein in the U1500.

Pawn Wise: The Atlantic All-Ages Chess Festival 2022 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, July 29- August 2

Pawn Wise: The Atlantic All-Ages Chess Festival 2022 will take place at St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia from July 29- August 2. The Festival offers the Mayflower Open, the Canadian Seniors Championships (65+ and 50+), and Jack de la Torre from the University of Texas as keynote speaker. In addition, a specially commissioned Nova Scotia Commemorative Chess Set will be on display as well as first editions of Andre Philidor's Tabular Demonstrations (1819) and The Hastings Chess Tournament Book (1896). American players are welcomed to participate.

In Memory: Mark McPheters

With great sadness we report the passing of Mark Edward McPheters. A longtime member and organizer of the Waterville Chess Club, Mark was a beloved figure in the Maine chess community for so many years. He will be dearly missed. Our deepest condolences to Mark's family and friends.
