The Brooklin School is First Beneficiary of CiMS Initiative

We are delighted to report that the Brooklin School, located on the Blue Hill Peninsula in Hancock County Maine, is the first school to benefit from the Chess in Maine Schools Initiative. The school will receive tournament-quality chess sets, roll-up boards, bags, digital chess clocks, a 550-page Common-Core-aligned chess curriculum, twenty ChessKid.com year-long memberships, and ongoing technical support in establishing and maintaining a scholastic chess program.

Aronian Wins FIDE World Cup

Levon Aronian won the 2017 FIDE World Cup with two back-to-back wins in the first set of tie break matches over Ding Liren of China after the four-game final match between these two chess giants was tied at 2.0 points apiece. The grueling World Cup featured 128 of the world's best players and was played from September 2-27, 2017 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Here's the details with a complete game list.

James E. Palange: A Part of Maine Chess History

We received an inquiry about former Maine chess player James E. Palange from his son Marius Palange. Marius was interested in finding out more about his father's chess-playing experiences back in the 1950's and '60's. We put this inquiry out to our community and got a response from Roger Morin, the multi-time Maine State Champion, who considered James Palange a long-time chess friend and significant influence on his own chess career.

Bapst Impromtu Swiss #3 Tournament Report

Six intrepid chess players competed in the Third Bapst Impromtu Swiss Tournament played on Friday evening, September 15, 2017. Wyatt Hendrix rose to the top of the crosstable with a nice final-round victory over top-rated Brian Hurst to finish the event with a perfect 3.0 points in three games.

Four-Way Tie at Bapst End of Summer Tournament

Four players each put up 3.0 points in the Open section of the Bapst End of Summer tournament played on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. The winners were: Aaron Spencer, Ryan Tripp, Jacques Blanchette, and Brian Hurst. In the U1200 section, Luc Blanchette, Samanthak Thiagarajan, and Andrew Brenneman shared the top spot. Cape Elizabeth Chess Club Resumes Meetings at the Local Buzz Cafe

The Cape Elizabeth Chess Club will resume their Saturday morning meetings as of Saturday, September 2, 2017. The club meets at the Local Buzz café, 327 Ocean House Road in Cape Elizabeth, Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Come on down for coffee, breakfast and a few games of chess.
