Tom Sandford Retires from UMaine after 35 Years of Service

The University of Maine Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering honored Professor Tom Sandford with a retirement party on May 20, 2016 to thank him for his thirty-five years of dedicated service to the University, engineering education, and the field of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. The ChessMaine.net community knows Tom as a tireless advocate of chess in Maine. He has served as a tournament director and organizer for many years and is a fierce over-the-board competitor. We wish Tom all the best in his retirement!

Benjamin Mock Competes in the National Elementary (K-6) Championship

Ben Mock made the trek out to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in the National Elementary (K-6) Championship. His mom, Elizabeth, submitted this thoughtful, intimate report of their experience at the tournament. Elizabeth also took some photos while at the event and she was kind enough to share these with us as well. We hope you enjoy this tournament report given from a parent's perspective.

Fabiano Caruana and Nazi Paikidze are US Champions

May 2, 2016

Fabiano Caruana topped a stellar field of grandmasters including Hikaru Nakamura, Wesly So, Gata Kamsky and others to win the US Championship played at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis on April 13-30. In the Women's Championship, International Master Nazi Paikidze, the only player without a single loss, took first with 8.5/11.
