Twenty players competed in the 10th Annual ChessMaine.net Championship held on Saturday, June 25th, 2016 at the Best Western Plus Waterville Grand Hotel. Jarod Bryan was the only player to score 4.0 points in four games and that netted him first place in the open section. International Master Danny Kopec passed away on June 12th at the age of 62. In addition to being an International Master and chess author, Kopec was a professor at Brooklyn College who held a PhD in Machine Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. He won back-to-back Maine State Championships in 1989 and 1990. IM Kopec was well known for his highly instructive and entertaining lectures on chess and many other topics. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends..

Maine scholastic chess player Erin Gerbi has qualified for the Summer Nationals of the U.S. Fencing Association. She is the only Maine youth to qualify for this tournament. Erin, who just turned thirteen, has been fencing since she was nine and has represented the Stillwater Montessorri School in Old Town at state scholastic chess tournaments. We wish her the best of luck at the Fencing Summer Nationals.
