Ellsworth Chess Club Defeats Bangor in a Seven-Board Match

On Wednesday evening August 27th at the Ellsworth Public Library, the Ellsworth Chess Club upset the Bangor Chess Club 8-6 in a seven-board, two-games-each match despite missing five of their top ten chess players. There will be a return match in September in Bangor at BAM! Bookstore.

Twenty-Four Hours in Fredericton, New Brunswick

On a recent trip to Fredericton, New Brunswick we discovered this delightful French cafe with an interesting name. Inquiring on the origin of the name over tea and cream-filled fruit pastries we were informed that during renovation of the space a single chess piece was found on a windowsill. In addition, Chess Piece Patisserie and Cafe is located on Queen Street in the heart of downtown Fredericton, just a few blocks from King Street and Bishop Street.

ChessMaine.net Honored by 2014 Chess Journalists of America Awards Program

ChessMaine.net has been selected by the Chess Journalists of America as the Best USCF State Chapter Website for 2014. This is the third time the official website of the Maine Chess Association has been honored by the Chess Journalists of America. Morin Wins Houlton August Quad

Roger Morin won the Houlton August Quad played on August 9th at The Art Studio in Houlton with a perfect 3.0 points in three games. The other three participants--Ray Haines, Lance Beloungie and Roger Hardison--all tied for second place with 1.0 point. Here's the USCF crosstable and a selected game.

Maine Chess Player of the Year Current Standings

August 16, 2014

Lance Beloungie leads the Maine Chess Player of the Year competition with a score of 25.2 points. He is trailed by Roger Morin and Curt Brock with 20.5 and 20.0 points respectively. The next event is the First Lincoln Open on Saturday, September 27, 2014. More information on the year-long Maine Chess Player of the Year competition can be found here.
