Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament Report

Thirty-five players competed in four sections at the 9th Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament played at the Airline Community School in Aurora on Saturday, December 14th. Topping the crosstables were: Roger Morin and Aaron Spencer (Open), Ian Youth and Frank Collemer (U1400), Brendan Penfold (U1000) and Sam Fournier (U600 & Unrated). Thanks to all players, parents, coaches and volunteers for making this tournament a great success.

A Correspondence Game from the 2013 Maine Chess Player of the Year

Roger Morin's correspondence victory over the 1983 Mississippi State over-the-board champion was featured in Alex Dunne's The Check is in the Mail article in the August 1984 edition of Chess Life. Morin was, at the time, Maine's only USCF postal master. The game is an exciting struggle and a fitting tribute to our current Player of the Year.

MECA Elections

It's time to elect the Maine Chess Association Policy Board for 2014-15. The Policy Board consists of four officers and four directors to assist with promoting chess activities in Maine, including the Maine State Chess Championship tournament and to support the official MECA website, ChessMaine.net. Policy Board members serve a two-year term.

Roger Morin has Clinched 2013 Maine Chess Player of the Year with One Event Remaining

With one tournament still remaining on the Maine Chess Player of the Year calendar, Roger Morin has put the competition out of reach and will be the 2013 Player of the Year. Congratulations Roger! Morin scored a whopping 62.4 points far ahead of second place finisher Lance Beloungie with 44.1. If the standings remain constant after the Aurora Winter Solstice coming up this weekend, Jarod Bryan will take third with 37.3 points.

Fall Chess@ UMA 2013 Tournament Report

Forty players met over the board at the Fall Chess@ UMaine Augusta Tournament played on the campus of the University of Maine in Augusta on November 16th, 2013. The tournament was contested in nine sections with ratings ranging from USCF 1977 to 347. Here's the illustrated tournament report with crosstables.
