2014 MLK Day Tournament Report

Sixty-two players turned out on January 20th to play in the 15th Annual MLK Day Tournament hosted by the Stillwater Montessori School in Old Town. The tournament featured four section: Open, K-12, K-8 and K-6 non-rated. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.

Saco Open Tournament Report

January 26, 2014

Thirty-one players participated in the two section 2014 Saco Open played at the Hampton Inn in Saco, Maine on January 18th-19th. GM Alexander Ivanov and IM David Vigorito shared first in the open section with 3.5 points. In the U1750 section, newcomer Carther Theogene swept the field with 4.0 points in four games and posted a provisional rating of USCF 2192.

9th Annual Joe Brown Memorial Tournament Report

On Saturday January 25th, twenty-six young chess players took part in the 8th Annual Joe Brown Memorial Chess Tournament honoring a former Deer Isle-Stonington chess player. In this non-rated tournament, each player completed four rounds except players in the 7th-8th grade division who played in a three-round quad. The time control was Game/15. Mainers at the 2014 Boston Chess Congress

Ten Maine chess players participated in the 2014 Boston Chess Congress at the Hyatt Boston Harbor hotel from January 10th-12th. This is the tournament's third year and each year it increases in popularity. Truly a top-flight tournament, the BCC attracted a number of GM's, IM's and FM's, offered superior playing conditions and was impeccably organized and directed by the Continental Chess Association.

In Memory of Bob Solinger: John Bapst Tournament Report

Forty-three players turned out at Maine's first chess tournament of the new year. The John Bapst Tournament in Memory of Bob Solinger was played at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor on Sunday, January 5th. The tournament remembers and honors former John Bapst chess team coach Bob Solinger who passed away on September 23, 2011.

2013 Maine Chess Player of the Year Final Results

Roger Morin has again won the Maine Chess Association Chess Player of the Year competition, adding his name to the traveling trophy for the second time in 3 years, and the $150 first place prize. Lance Beloungie placed second, collecting $75. There were 11 CPY Events held in 2013 for a possible total of 90 points based on number of games plus tournament score. A total of 116 players participated in various events, with CPY points awarded to players with active MECA memberships. Congratulations to Roger and Lance, and thanks to all the participants in this year's competition.

Maine Chess Association Policy Board is Elected for 2014-15

Ballots have been counted for the election of the 2014-15 Policy Board of the Maine Chess Association. All declared candidates were elected since there was only a single candidate for each position. Matthew Fishbein was a late entry for the fourth director position and won as a write-in candidate.
