Fred Irons is a man of many talents. A chess player and coach, university professor, musician, writer and artist are just a few of the possible titles one could attribute to this fine gentleman. Some of Fred's chess-themed art was recently on display at the Bangor Art Society's annual Members Show at the Bangor Public Library.

Maine's own Aaron Spencer went undefeated in the U2000 section of the 12th Foxwoods Open played on January 22-26, 2014 in Mashantucket, Conn. to take clear first with a score of 6.0 points in seven rounds. With a performance rating of 2234, he rolled over a number of A-class players and stoked his rating to an expert-level 2057. Five other Mainers competed in the tournament as well: Matthew Fishbein, Dmitry Albin, Gabe Borland, Brian Hurst and Ian Youth. On Monday, February 3rd, upwards of 150 K-8 students participated in the third in a series of informal chess matches hosted by the Ellsworth Middle School and organized by Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School chess coach Dick Powell. These non-USCF rated "chess afternoons" give scholastic players an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming state team and individual scholastic championships held in March at the University of Maine Orono and to have great fun while they're at it.
