Updating the ChessMaine.net Community

You may have noticed in recent months that there has been very little activity on ChessMaine.net. As editor of this site, I am responsible for this lack of activity. The reason is that my life of late had become nearly unmanageable. The death of both of my parents in a five-month period coupled with countless projects and responsibilities have made it impossible for me to keep the site up to the journalistic standard that it has become know for. My dad, who taught me the moves and instilled in me a great love for the game, was one of the site's biggest fans duly reading each post, following each link and playing over each game. Now that this difficult period in my life is beginning to recede, I look forward to getting back to ChessMaine.net as my dad looks on from that chessboard in the sky.

Maine Chess Player of the Year Current Standings

After seven Maine Chess Player of the Year events, Roger Morin has a commanding lead of 11.6 points over his next closest rival Lance Beloungie. Jarod Bryan, Curt Brock and Dan Fishbein round out the top five places heading into the Downeast Open to be played on August 3rd. Here's the complete standings with score breakdown.

Morin Defeats Franklin in Four-Game Match

June 28, 2013

Roger Morin conceded only one draw to his opponent Troy Franklin in their four-game match played in Houlton on June 1st and 2nd, 2013. The draw came in round three--too late for Franklin to save the match. Here's the match photo, crosstable and a selected game.

UMA Spring Quads Tournament Report

Sixteen players competed in the University of Maine at Augusta Spring Quads held on the campus of UMA on June 8th, 2013. Winners were: Jarod Bryan (Quad 1), William Ravn and George Spahn (Quad 2), Corey Dunn (Quad 3) and Joseph Powell (Quad 4). Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.

Portland Area Elementary Schools Meet in Chess Competition

June 12, 2013

The rainy day was one of all too many in May, but was welcomed by the chess coaches as Little League was cancelled and several chess team members could make the tournament at the East End Community School after all. Nearly 50 players from the East End Community, Ocean Avenue, and Falmouth Elementary Schools met in the East End School cafeteria to play chess matches after a quick supper of pizza generously provided by Leonardo's Pizza.

Morin Defeats Spencer (2.5 -1.5) in Four Game Match

May 19, 2013

Former Maine State Champions Roger Morin and Aaron Spencer played a four game match in Houlton on May 11-12th, 2013 with the time control of game in 90 minutes + 5 second delay. Spencer got off to a strong start with 1.5 points in the first two games. He could not sustain his momentum however and dropped both games three and four to give Morin the match victory 2.5 -1.5.

Three Share First at 2013 Maine Championship

May 12, 2013

Matthew Fishbein, Joshua Quint and Ruben Babayan each scored 4.0 points to share equal first at the 2013 Maine State Chess Championship played at the Best Western Plus Waterville Grand Hotel on April 27-28, 2013. As a testament to the competitiveness of the tournament, the top eleven places were separated by a single point. Here's a photo report with USCF crosstable. Cape Elizabeth High School Competes at Supernationals

The Cape Elizabeth High School Chess team, which won this year's Maine State High School Team Championship in March, helped represent the state at the USCF SuperNationals V in Nashville, Tennessee from April 4-8. The tournament, held at the massive Opryland Resort Hotel, was the largest rated chess tournament in world history, attracting 5,335 players. The tournament, held every four years, combines the annual national Elementary, Junior High and High School championships into one massive event.

Brooklyn Castle Movie Screening at Stonington Opera House

April 20, 2013

On Wednesday evening April 17th the Stonington Opera House hosted a screening of the chess film Brooklyn Castle. The film tells the stories of five members of the chess team at the below-the-poverty-line inner New York City junior high school I.S. 318 that has won more national championships than any other in the country. Following the screening the Executive Director of the Opera House, Linda Nelson, facilitated a "talk back" in which a four-person panel discussed the film and the state of chess in Maine with the audience.

Presque Isle April U1500 Tournament Report

April 18, 2013

Nine players competed in the April U1500 tournament at the University of Maine in Presque Isle on April 6th, 2013. Highest rated Richard Michaud won the four round tournament with 3.5 points. Trailing Michaud were Cody Maldonado and Cody Queen with 3.0 points. Here are photos and a USCF crosstable of the event.
