Brewer Hosts National Chess Day Tournament
10.16.13 President Gerald R. Ford declared October 9th, 1976 as the first National Chess day stating, "For both professionals and amateurs, chess is a game that sharpens the mind, tests human faculties and encourages healthy competition. It has captivated the attention of players and spectators worldwide and will continue to do so as long as competition and excellence challenge mankind." To commemorate National Chess Day this year, the Brewer Community School hosted a tournament that attracted twenty-eight players in two sections.
Aaron Spencer (1940) won the six-player open section scoring a perfect four wins in four games. Spencer was trailed by Gabe Borland and Leo Davis who tied for second with two wins and two losses apiece. Roger Morin, Brian Hurst and J. Paul Ciarrocchi rounded out the crosstable finishing in 4th-6th places respectively.
In the U1000 section, Joseph Powell scored 4.0 points in four games to take first place. He was trailed by Chris Viera who took clear second with 3.5 points and four players who tied for third place with 3.0 points: Evan Viera, Nicholas Kawamura, Adam Farrington and John Lehman.
Thanks to organizer and tournament director Steve Wong, the Brewer Community School and all players, parents and coaches who helped make the day a great success.

Comments
Thank You for running the tournament on National Chess Day Steve .
Possibly next year if I don't have too many wins to boost my rating I will be able to enter the U 2700 section .
