World Chess Championship Opening Ceremony

The World Chess Championship between current world champion Vishwanathan Anand and challenger Magnus Carlsen kicked off today in Chenai, India with an official opening ceremony and press conference. Both players appeared healthy, rested and ready for the twelve-game match. Game one will be played on Saturday, November 9th. Set your alarm clocks and put the coffee on because the first pawn will be pushed at 4:30 a.m. eastern time.

Jason Spector USCF 2200!

Former Bowdoin College student and former Maine State Champion Jason Spector has achieved the amateur chess player's holy grail. At a chess tournament played in Nashville, Tennessee on September 30, 2013, Jason's USCF rating reached 2200. Brewer Hosts National Chess Day Tournament

President Gerald R. Ford declared October 9th, 1976 as the first National Chess day stating, "For both professionals and amateurs, chess is a game that sharpens the mind, tests human faculties and encourages healthy competition. It has captivated the attention of players and spectators worldwide and will continue to do so as long as competition and excellence challenge mankind." To commemorate National Chess Day this year, the Brewer Community School hosted a tournament that attracted twenty-eight players in two sections.

Bangor's Queen City Chess Club is on the Scene

Maine's newest chess club is up and running at BAM! (Books-A-Million) at the Bangor Mall. The club meets Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. until close (10:00 p.m.) and attracts a wide variety of players from beginners to experts. While you are there you can check out both the cafe offerings and the ample selection of chess books on the stacks.

Eastern Maine Open Tournament Report

The 2013 Eastern Maine Open was held on Saturday, October 5th at the University of Maine in Orono. Nineteen players competed in two sections. The open section was won by Roger Morin with 3.5 points and Vincent Paris and Lois Morin shared first in the U1000 section with 3.0 points. 2013 ChessMaine.net Championship Tournament Report

September 27, 2013

Twenty-two players turned out on a rainy early summer day to compete in the ChessMaine.net Championship on June 26th, 2013 at the Cotter Union on the campus of Colby College in Waterville, Maine. The tournament was contested in two sections: Jarod Bryan won the open with a perfect 4.0 points in four games and Dan Fishbein took first in the U1250 section winning all of his games and scoring 3.0 points.
