World Chess Championship Match Preview

The 2013 FIDE World Chess Championship match will take place on November 7-26, 2013 in Chennai, India. It is a match for the highest crown in chess between the Defending Champion Viswanathan Anand of India and the Challenger Magnus Carlsen of Norway.

Brewer Hosts National Chess Day Tournament

President Gerald R. Ford declared October 9th, 1976 as the first National Chess day stating, "For both professionals and amateurs, chess is a game that sharpens the mind, tests human faculties and encourages healthy competition. It has captivated the attention of players and spectators worldwide and will continue to do so as long as competition and excellence challenge mankind." To commemorate National Chess Day this year, the Brewer Community School hosted a tournament that attracted twenty-eight players in two sections.

Bangor's Queen City Chess Club is on the Scene

Maine's newest chess club is up and running at BAM! (Books-A-Million) at the Bangor Mall. The club meets Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. until close (10:00 p.m.) and attracts a wide variety of players from beginners to experts. While you are there you can check out both the cafe offerings and the ample selection of chess books on the stacks.

Eastern Maine Open Tournament Report

The 2013 Eastern Maine Open was held on Saturday, October 5th at the University of Maine in Orono. Nineteen players competed in two sections. The open section was won by Roger Morin with 3.5 points and Vincent Paris and Lois Morin shared first in the U1000 section with 3.0 points. 2013 ChessMaine.net Championship Tournament Report

Twenty-two players turned out on a rainy early summer day to compete in the ChessMaine.net Championship on June 26th, 2013 at the Cotter Union on the campus of Colby College in Waterville, Maine. The tournament was contested in two sections: Jarod Bryan won the open with a perfect 4.0 points in four games and Dan Fishbein took first in the U1250 section winning all of his games and scoring 3.0 points. Updating the ChessMaine.net Community

You may have noticed in recent months that there has been very little activity on ChessMaine.net. As editor of this site, I am responsible for this lack of activity. The reason is that my life of late had become nearly unmanageable. The death of both of my parents in a five-month period coupled with countless projects and responsibilities have made it impossible for me to keep the site up to the journalistic standard that it has become know for. My dad, who taught me the moves and instilled in me a great love for the game, was one of the site's biggest fans duly reading each post, following each link and playing over each game. Now that this difficult period in my life is beginning to recede, I look forward to getting back to ChessMaine.net as my dad looks on from that chessboard in the sky.

Maine Chess Player of the Year Current Standings

After seven Maine Chess Player of the Year events, Roger Morin has a commanding lead of 11.6 points over his next closest rival Lance Beloungie. Jarod Bryan, Curt Brock and Dan Fishbein round out the top five places heading into the Downeast Open to be played on August 3rd. Here's the complete standings with score breakdown.

Morin Defeats Franklin in Four-Game Match

Roger Morin conceded only one draw to his opponent Troy Franklin in their four-game match played in Houlton on June 1st and 2nd, 2013. The draw came in round three--too late for Franklin to save the match. Here's the match photo, crosstable and a selected game.

UMA Spring Quads Tournament Report

Sixteen players competed in the University of Maine at Augusta Spring Quads held on the campus of UMA on June 8th, 2013.
