St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic Tournament Report

Roger Morin swept the field with a perfect 4 for 4 at the St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic held August 16, 2008 at the Crohn Family Conference Center in Perry, Maine. Trailing Morin and tying for 2nd-5th place were Fred McKim, Jason Manley, Lily Ann Briggs and Nathaniel Simpson.

Chess at the Maine Grind Cafe

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Ellsworth Chess Club President Dick Powell, chess will be available for a second night of the week in Ellsworth. The Maine Grind Cafe on Main Street will host a chess and game night Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. This is in addition to the regular club meeting on Thursdays at Frankie's Cafe in Mr. Paperback on High Street.

In Memoriam: Richard Lynn Ainsworth

Richard Lynn Ainsworth of Trenton passed away on September 5, 2008. Lynn was an avid over-the-board player as well as a correspondence chess expert. He often played at the Ellsworth Chess Club where he will be fondly remembered and profoundly missed. Our deepest condolences to Lynn's family and friends.

Games from the Denker Tournament of High School Champions

The Maine Representative to the Denker Tournament of High School Champions, Fritz Eyerer, has provided us with his six games from that tournament. Eyerer scored a very respectable 3.0 points in six rounds against state champions from across the nation. Interesting clashes all, we hope you enjoy them.

The Most Active Club in Maine?

The most active club? It might just be the Ellsworth Chess Club that meets on Thursday nights from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at Mr. Paperback in Ellsworth. All summer the club has been consistently bringing in big numbers of chess players. As the school year begins, club president Dick Powell hopes this trend continues.

In Memoriam: Joel Cartwright

Many of us remember Joel Cartwright as an avid scholastic chess player, veteran of many state championship tournaments and graduate of Bowdoin College. Joel took his own life on June 27, 2008 at his family's cottage in Tennants Harbor. We are profoundly saddened by this tragedy and extend our deepest sympathies to Joel's family and friends. Caitlin Elsaesser of the Times Record prepared this special report including a touching slideshow tribute to Joel.

Brock Stuns Field; Wins Downeast Open

August 21, 2008

According to his rating Curt Brock was expected to finish dead last in the Downeast Open Tournament played at Southern Maine Community College on August 16, 2008. Apparently no one alerted Brock to this minor detail as he went on to turn the crosstable up-side-down and score 3.5 points taking first with a 2190 or +637! performance rating.
