WCC Bonn Round 5: Anand Does it Again With Black!

GM Levon Aronian, the world's number seven ranked player mused during his analysis of round 5, "Did [Anand] summon the spirit of great Mikhail Tal to aid him? There is no other explanation than that there is something magical or surreal going on in Bonn." Two straight wins with black during a world championship match is a rare thing indeed. Anand now leads 3.5-1.5.

Eastern Maine Open *Reminder*

WCC Bonn Round 4: Kramnik Draws With Black

In a relatively uneventful Queen's Gambit Declined, Kramnik managed comfortable equality with the black pieces and the players agreed to a draw after 29 moves. One-third of the match is complete; with eight games remaining Anand holds a 2.5-1.5 lead.

WCC Bonn Round 3: Anand Wins With The Slav

Playing the Slav Defense, Viswanathan Anand came up with an innovation that had Kramnik well behind on the clock. Anand made his first 18 moves in 20 minutes, it took Kramnik an hour and 20 minutes to do the same. Home preparation paid off and Kramnik resigned before making his 42nd move. Anand leads the match 2-1.

WCC Bonn Round 2

Exactly as in Game 1, both players made 32 moves in Game 2 before agreeing to a draw. The difference today was that Anand, typically a 1. e4 player, ventured 1. d4 in his first game with the white pieces. Could this be a harbinger of more Queen pawn games to come?

World Chess Championship Bonn, Germany Round 1

The World Chess Championship began today in Bonn, Germany between defending Word Champion Viswanathan Anand of India and Vladimir Kramnik of Russia. As expected, both players were feeling each other out and the game fizzled out to a draw after Black's 32nd move.

St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic Tournament Report

Roger Morin swept the field with a perfect 4 for 4 at the St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic held August 16, 2008 at the Crohn Family Conference Center in Perry, Maine. Trailing Morin and tying for 2nd-5th place were Fred McKim, Jason Manley, Lily Ann Briggs and Nathaniel Simpson.
