The regular meeting of the Ellsworth Chess Club took place on Thursday, September 4th at Frankie's Cafe in Mr. Paperback. For the first time since mid-June the numbers of members in attendance was below double figures. The first week of school might have played a role in that outcome. The format was free-play with the members deciding who to challenge and the time frame to be used in the game. Some games were of the blitz variety (Game 5 or Game 10) while other matches were played without benefit of a clock. Joel Knight of Belfast, a correspondance chess enthouiast, bested Dick Powell of Ellsworth in the night's longest match--90minutes! Knight earned the victory with solid positional play and error-free chess. In other games of note club champion Paul Wlodkowski won all the matches he participated in except one...that one was an upset by Matt Hall, last week's "B" Tournament winner who defeated Wlodkowski for the first time ever! Mark Woida of MDI had a positive evening as did Andy Bryan of Holden, and Jeremy Mason of MDI.
