Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament Report

Thirty-seven players turned out on a clear and cold pre-winter day for the 5th Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament held at the Airline Community School in Aurora. Roger Morin took first in the open section with a perfect 3.0 points, John Xiang topped the U1000 section with 3.5 points and newcomer Ian Youth of Scarborough went unbeaten and untied in the U600 section scoring 4.0 points.

Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament *Reminder*

The Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament is scheduled for this Saturday, December 12, 2009. Take a break from your holiday shopping and come play some chess in Downeast Maine. There will be four sections: Open, U1400, U1000 and U600/Unrated for K-8 players; prizes include cash, books, chess sets and boards. Great homemade food too!

MECA Online Election Results

Andy Bryan and Maggie Bryan have been elected President and Vice President of the Maine Chess Association by convincing margins. Uncontested candidates for Secretary, Lee Doucette and Treasurer, Andrey Savov, as well as four new Policy Board members: Steve Abrahams, John Malev, Roger Morin and Brian Roderick were also chosen.

David Vigorito Wins Boston University Open

On a recent trip to Boston we took in the Boston University Open (David Vigorito took first with a perfect score) and checked out the chess scene at Harvard Square in Cambridge (where a lot of imperfect but nonetheless fun chess was being played).

Steve Morgan Elected to CCLA Board of Directors

Maine chess expert and coach Steve Morgan was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Correspondence Chess League of America. CCLA is a non-profit organization that has been conducting postal chess tournaments since 1897, as CCLA since 1909. Congratulations Steve!

2010 Scholastic State Championship Dates Announced

The Maine Association of Chess Coaches had its annual fall meeting on October 17, 2009 at the University of Maine in Orono.
