Chess by the Book

ChessMaine.net was on-hand for the first meeting of the Bucksport Chess Club on October 28th, 2010 at BookStacks bookstore on Main Street in Bucksport. Only two brave souls turned up for some chess but with a friendly atmosphere, thousands of book titles, a huge selection of magazines and periodicals and BookStacks's now famous "pretty good coffee" the club is bound to attract more Bucksport-area chess players.

State Scholastic Championship Dates Chosen

The Maine Association of Chess Coaches met for their Scholastic Chess Fall Planning Meeting on October 23rd, 2010 at the University of Maine in Orono. A lively discussion of a number of topics took place not the least of which was the dates for the state scholastic championships. Here are the notes from the meeting thanks to MACC Board Member Ron Lewis.

5th Houlton Open Tournament Report

October 23, 2010

Todd Snyder came from behind to win the 5th Houlton Open in the final round with a defeat over Roger Peterson. Peterson had a perfect 3.0 points in three games going into the fourth round when, after an up-and-down battle, Snyder came out on top. The tournament, a small but strong event with an average rating of USCF 1756, was played at the Morin Art Studio in Houlton on October 16th, 2010.

Maine's Newest Chess Club

We welcome the Bucksport Chess Club to the Maine Chess Community. Andy Lacher of Bookstacks Bookstore in Bucksport will host the new Bucksport Chess Club scheduled to meet the last Thursday of each month beginning October 28th, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Bookstacks located at 71 Main Street in Bucksport. We wish Andy the best of luck with the new club and we hope to see you there!

MECA and MACC Annual Meetings

The Maine Association of Chess Coaches will hold its Scholastic Chess Planning Meeting on Saturday, October 23rd at 1:00 p.m. in the Memorial Union at the University of Maine Orono. The Maine Chess Association will hold its Annual Meeting on Sunday, October 24th at 1:00 p.m. at Governor's Restaurant in Waterville. All are invited to attend. Hope to see you there.

Matthew Fishbein Wins Eastern Maine Open

October 4, 2010

Twelve-year-old Matthew Fishbein scored a perfect 4.0 points in a strong field of players to win the open section of the Eastern Maine Open played at the University of Maine Orono on Saturday, October 2, 2010. Following Fishbein with 3.0 points were New Yorker David Jefferies, Roger Morin and Roger Peterson. Ben Hansel won the U1400 section with 3.5 points.
