Adult Education Chess Class at Gardiner High School

Longtime chess player and instructor Barry Magda is teaching a nine-week chess class Wednesday nights from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Gardiner High School. The class began on September 22nd and runs through November 17th. More students are needed so please pass the word and consider enrolling yourself. The class is one of many offered by MSAD #11 Adult Education. You will find a course description and more informationhere.

In Memoriam: David J. Eisen

David J. Eisen, correspondence chess International Master, winner of numerous USCF Absolute Championships and resident of Waterville, Maine passed away on September 16, 2010. We send our heartfelt condolences to David's family and friends.

Remembering Bent Larsen

September 25, 2010

We are saddened to report the passing of Danish chess legend Bent Larsen on September 9th, 2010 at the age of 75. During the 1960s and '70s GM Larsen was a multiple interzonal champion in the world championship cycle and, excepting Bobby Fischer, was the player most feared by the Soviet Union.

6th Presque Isle Open Tournament Report

The 6th Presque Isle Open was played on August 18th at the Presque Isle Library. Seven players competed in this four-round, G/60 tournament with Roger Morin taking clear first with 4.0 points.

NH chess players top Maine in 'Border Battle Cup'

Twenty chess players from Maine and New Hampshire faced off in a two-game match played at the Portsmouth (NH) Public Library on September 18, 2010. Chess at the Maine Potato Blossom Festival

Fort Fairfield's 63rd Maine Potato Blossom Festival was held from Friday, July 9th to Sunday, July 18th, 2010. Part of the festivities included a human chess game between Roger Morin and Roger Hardison in which 32 children and adults stood in as chess pieces.

Chess as Lifelong Learning

Many of our stories feature children and young adults and their relationship with chess. In this particular entry we take a look at a group of seniors in southern Maine who, through the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning and Jon Malev, have opportunities to learn chess and improve their game. The group meets at Prime Toyota Scion in Saco.

Maine vs NH Border Battle Final Rosters

The final rosters have been chosen for the First Annual Maine vs New Hampshire Border Battle to be played at the Portsmouth Public Library Levenson Community Meeting Room at 175 Parrott Avenue in Portsmouth, NH on September 18, 2010. Each team will field ten players and spectators are welcome.
