WGM Sabina Foisor Thrills in a 40-Board Simul

It would be difficult to find a more poised, gracious, and inspirational representative and role model for chess than WGM Sabina Foisor. Foisor spent the weekend in Maine to help celebrate the Maine Girls' and Women's Championship tournaments played on Saturday, February 2nd at the Bangor Public Library. On the evening before the tournament, Foisor played thirty-nine chess competitors, some of whom were rated over USCF 1700, simultaneously. A grueling five hours later, when the simul had concluded, Foisor's impressive record stood at 33 wins, four draws, and two losses. 2017 U.S. Women's Champion WGM Sabina Foisor is Coming to Maine!

The 2017 U.S. Women's Chess Champion WGM Sabina Foisor is coming to Maine! We are thrilled and honored to welcome this very accomplished international player to the Pine Tree State. Sabina will give a 40-board simultaneous chess exhibition at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 1st at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. Hurry! Jarod Bryan Wins Maine Blitz Championship

Eight-time Maine State Chess Champion Jarod Bryan added another title to his impressive resume. Bryan won the 2019 Maine State Blitz Championship played on Saturday, January 26th at Hermon High School in Hermon Maine. Players found there way through a mind-numbing crucible of sixteen games at the blitz time control of G/3+2. Managing Panic Disorder Through Chess Therapy

A paper was published in Volume 30 of the Asian Journal of Psychiatry that studied the effect of playing chess on treating a panic attack. Although this research is still in its infancy, the conclusion of this particular study was that chess therapy with the right level of difficulty can be recommended as a very effective non-pharmaceutical method for the successful treatment of panic attacks.

Maine State Blitz Championship this Sautrday in Hermon

The first Maine State Blitz Championship will be held this Saturday, January 26th at Hermon High School in Hermon, Maine. The tournament format is an eight-round double Swiss--each player will play two G/3, +2 games against eight different opponents for a total of sixteen games. Same-day registration begins at 12:15 p.m. with the first round beginning at 1:00 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Winter Storm Tournament Updates

A winter storm warning remains in effect from 9:00 p.m. Saturday, January 19th - 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 21st. Heavy snow and mixed precipitation accumulating from 12 to 20 inches with winds gusting to 35 m.p.h. are expected accross the state. Morin Wins January Houlton Open

Roger Morin ran the table at the January 2019 Houlton Open played on Saturday, January 12th at the Art Studio in Houlton, Maine. Eight players, braving sub-zero wind chill temperatures, traveled to Aroostook County to participate in this event. Bob Solinger Memorial Tournament Report

January 7, 2019

A whopping eighty-one players turned out for Maine's first US Chess rated tournament of 2019. The Bob Solinger Memorial Tournament held at John Bapst High School on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 offered five sections: Open, U1600, U1200, U800, and U400. This tournament attracted a near-record number of participants in a non-state scholastic championship tournament. The record of 104 players is still held by the 2000 St. Mary's Winter Warm-Up.
