All Saints Winter Warmup Tournament Report

The All Saints Winter Warmup tournament has been a staple on the Maine scholastic chess calendar for many years. Its original purpose, and one that it still fulfills today, was to help prepare scholastic chess players for the upcoming State Scholastic Chess Championships traditionally held in March. This year's Winter Warmup, played on Saturday, February 23rd in Bangor, was offered in five sections: Open, K-12, K-8, K-6, and a non-rated K-4 section. Broadening Your Chess Geography

Maine Girls' Chess Champion Featured in the Journal Tribune

The 2019 Maine Girls' Chess Champion Agata Sloniewska was featured in an article in the online Journal Tribune on February 16th. Sloniewska, a native of Poland and sophomore at Thornton Academy, won the right to represent Maine at the 2019 National Girls Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida in August.

The Chess Atlantic Newsletter Edition 001

Lloyd Lombard has created a new publication called the Chess Atlantic Newsletter by merging the Annapolis West Chess Club Newsletter and the Nova Scotia Chess Association Newsletter. This outstanding resource is a wealth of interesting information for chess players in the Atlantic Maritimes. The inaugural edition of the Chess Atlantic Newsletter includes articles containing annotated games, chess club and instructor information, girls' and women's chess, the resurgence of the classic Drueke no. 35 Players' Choice set, and much more

In Memory: Duane Mercier (1952 - 2019)

We are very saddened to report the passing of 1977 Maine State Chess Champion and former Cony High School chess coach Duane Mercier. Duane loved life and he loved his family. During his time at Cony High School in the 1970's and 80's he was a huge influence to a great number of students many of whom went on to become some of Maine's top chess players. Duane Mercier will be dearly missed. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends

Panther Open and Scholastic Tournament Report

In its second year, the Panther Open and Scholastic played on Saturday, February 9th at Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro attracted thirty players in four sections. Lincolnville Central School Tournament Report

The Second Annual Lincolnville Central School Scholastic Chess Tournament was held on Sunday, February 10th. Thirty-five scholastic players in grades K-6 participated in three sections. Maine vs Primorsky Krai Scholastic Chess Match Report

On Friday, February 8th at 6:00 p.m. eastern U.S. time, ten scholastic chess players from Maine took part in an online chess match with ten players from the Primorsky Region of far eastern Russia. This first of its kind match was played on the lichess server and broadcast live on the Internet with commentary provided by Maine Chess Champion and National Master Matthew Fishbein.
