Homeless Immigrant Family Finds a Home Thanks to Eight-Year-Old Chess Champion

You may have heard about eight-year-old Tanitoluwa (Tani) Adewumi who, just one week ago, was living with his family in a homeless shelter in New York City. Because of his outstanding performance at the New York Scholastic Chess Championship and the subsequent media attention he is receiving, a generous donor has come forward to offer his family a rent-free apartment, and a GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $250,000 which his family will use to help other African immigrants through the new Tanitoluwa Adewumi Foundation.

Claude E. Webber Memorial Tournament Report

Sixty-four players came out to compete in the Claude E. Webber Memorial Tournament played at Bonny Eagle Middle School in Buxton on Saturday, March 23rd. Players hailed from: John Bapst, Cheverus, Westbrook, Thornton Academy, Cape Elizabeth, Bonny Eagle, Buxton Center, Windham, Gorham, George E Jack, and Falmouth. Sam Holbrook of Cheverus High School is National K-12 U1200 Runner-Up

Five players from Cheverus High School in Portland along with their coach Dan Lavallee made the trip to Chicago to compete in the 2019 National High School (K-12) Championship. Sam Holbrook scored an incredible undefeated 6.5 points in seven games to finish equal second in the 392-player U1200 section. Here's the rundown of the event courtesy of coach Lavallee.

Caribou High School Senior Headed to Polgar Invitational Featured in Online Journal The County

Caribou High School senior, Hailey Holmquist, will represent Maine at the Susan Polgar Foundation Girls' Invitational chess tournament from June 22-27 at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. Holmquist earned her invitation to the prestigious tournament, which selects one female scholastic chess player from each state, as a result of her performance at the Maine Girls' Championship held at the Bangor Public Library in February. Congratulations to Hailey for receiving this honor and all the best in St. Louis!

Chess Clubs for Students

Chess author, teacher, and coach John Bain is most well known for his instructional workbook Chess Tactics for Students--a book that award-winning chess instructor Dan Heisman recommends all his students learn virtually by heart. Bain also maintains the excellent website Chess for Students which contains a wealth of chess resources for students of the game. Remembering Bobby Fischer Houlton Tournament Report

Cynthia Cui won the Remembering Bobby Fischer Houlton Tournament with a perfect 4.0 points in four games. The tournament, played in Houlton, Maine on the American World Champion's birthday--March 9th--attracted ten players in one section. Trailing Cui were Roger Morin in clear second and Tom Sandford and Nathan Gates who tied for third with 2.5 points.

2019 Winter Deaflympics to Include Chess

For the first time, chess has been recognized by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf to be included in the Winter Deaflympics. The Deaflympics, which is sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee, is a quadrennial international elite sporting event that has been attracting deaf athletes since its inception in 1924. The American Chess Association of the Deaf, in partnership with the USA Deaf Sports Federation, is in the process of selecting a deaf chess team to represent the United States at the 2019 Winter Deaflympics in December in Chiavenna, Italy.

State Scholastic Team Chess Championships Tournament Report

Three Hundred ninety-three players and sixty-three teams competed in the 2019 State Scholastic Team Chess Championship played at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine on Saturday, March 2nd. The tournament offered thirteen sections from K-1 Novice to High School Championship and two Open sections. These numbers distinguish the tournament as one of the biggest chess tournaments ever held in Maine. Here's the richly illustrated tournament report with team and individual results.

Southwestern Maine High School Chess Championship Tournament Report

March 1, 2019

Like the All Saints Winter Warmup, the Southwestern Maine High School Chess Championship tournament is in place as a training tournament for those players who would like to get some chess competition in before the Scholastic Team Chess Championships. The "Southwesterns" were held at Cheverus High School in Portland on Saturday, February 23rd. The tournament had three sections: a six-player rated section and two non-rated sections.
