21st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Tournament Report

Scholastic chess tournaments in Maine continue to impress with the interest they generate and the numbers of players they attract. The 21st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day tournament played on Monday, January 20, 2020 at the Old Town United Methodist Church in Old Town, Maine attracted 105 players in six sections: Open, K-12, K-8, K-6, K-4, and a non-rated section. Thanks to the organizers, directors, and players for making this tournament a huge success.

John Bapst Fall Tournament Report

February 2, 2020

Thirty-three players turned out for the John Bapst Fall Tournament played at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor on Saturday, November 16, 2019. The four-round, G/45 +5 tournament offered three sections Open, U1500, and U1000. Winners were: Wyatt Hendrix (Open), Tony Freudig (U1500), and Samanthak Thiagarajan (U1000).

15th Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament Report

In the out-of-the-way hamlet of Aurora, Maine (population: not many) the Airline Community School has been hosting the Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament for fifteen consecutive years. Bob Solinger Memorial Tournament Report

January 13, 2020

A whopping eighty-four players turned out for Maine's first chess tournament of the year. The four round four section Bob Solinger Memorial was played on Saturday, January 11th at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. Top finishers were: Open Tristan Cousineau, U1500 Ben Penfold and Kevin Lin, U1000 Jacob Klein, U600 Rachel Norment and Emma Eckert. The tournament remembers and honors former John Bapst chess team coach Bob Solinger who passed away on September 23, 2011.

Prolific Chess Author and Publisher Bob Long Killed in his Home

We are deeply shocked and saddened to report the murder of author, publisher, and well-known chess personality Bob Long. Bob was a one-of-a-kind pioneer in the world of chess who dedicated his life to doing what he loved. As a chess expert, organizer, director, author, publisher, sharp-witted colleague, friend, and the list goes on, Bob was an indefatigable icon. He will be deeply missed by the many, many friends whose lives he touched.

The Chess Games of Ray Haines

Author Tim Sawyer has put together a new book entitled Chess Games of Ray Haines. Ray is a lifelong tournament player who lives in northern Maine. From the Introduction: This book is dedicated to the unsung heroes who keep playing chess year after year. They are our frequent opponents in clubs or online. Few people know their names, however our passion for chess suffers without regular opponents for us to play. The book contains 150 of Ray Haines's games grouped in 10 chapters by opening. It's available on Amazon.

In Memory: Benjamin Deschesne

January 7, 2020

Benjamin Deschesne, an alumnus of John Bapst and former scholastic chess player, passed away unexpectedly while away at college. Benjamin studied jazz at Rowan College in Glassboro, New Jersey, and continued to play chess actively while working on his studies. He was 19.

Cape Elizabeth December Swiss Tournament Report

December 27, 2019

On December 7, 2019, forty-seven players converged on Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth for a three section Swiss tournament. Isaac Dinnerstein took first in the Open section, Eric Dinnerstein topped the U1200 section and Dylan Miller-Barrett (3.0), Samuel Coldwell (3.0), and Joshua Barrett tied for first in the U800 section.
