A meeting of the Maine Chess Association Executive Board took place via Zoom on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. The meeting was attended by Michael Dudley (President), Dan DeLuca (Vice-President), Wyatt Hendrix (Secretary), Oisin O'Searcoid (Treasurer), Elisabeth Mock (EB member), Stephen Wong (EB member), Kate Ervin Kaplan (EB member), and Elizabeth Mock (EB Member). Skowhegan Area High School Hosts First-Ever Chess Tournament

January 21, 2022

Ten players competed in the Skowhegan Area High School January Blitz chess tournament on Thursday, January 20, 2022. Although the event was non-rated, it was the first chess event in the school's history using US Chess official pairing rules and tournament regulations. The SAHS Chess Club looks forward to hosting rated chess tournaments in the near future. Congratulations to Jack Donoghue who won the events with a perfect four points in four games and to all who participated.

MECA Annual Report

January 20, 2022

The Board of the Maine Chess Association has released the MECA Annual Report for 2022. The Report highlights how far the Association has come fulfilling its mission statement of Connecting Mainers through chess, sizes up current challenges in the state of chess in Maine, and looks forward with optimism as MECA continues to grow and serve its members and the chess community moving forward.

Submit Your Games for 2021 Q4 George Cunningham Brilliancy Prize Consideration

The George Cunningham Brilliancy Prize committee is now accepting submissions for the fourth quarter of 2021! If you have a game that you would like to submit, email a PGN or other text file of the game to Wyatt Hendrix igmwhendrix@gmail.com or Aaron Spencer aaronspencer92@gmail.com for consideration. To be eligible to receive the George Cunningham Brilliancy Prize, the winner must be a MECA member in good standing, and the game must have been played in the fourth quarter of 2021 (October 1 through December 31).

Harvard University School of Public Health Chess Cognition Study

The Harvard University T. H. Chan School of Public Health Program on the Global Demography of Aging is conducting a Chess Cognition Study. This study is being conducted in order to gather information on the cognitive abilities of chess players who are members of the United States Chess Federation. Colby College Students Build Virtual Reality Chess Environment

In Waterville, Maine, Colby College students are creating a three-dimensional virtual reality chess environment as part of a larger research project into how assistive technologies can expand information access, particularly for people with blindness and vision impairments.

16th Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament Report

December 11, 2021

The 16th Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament was held at the Airline Community School on Saturday, December 11, 2021. The event offered five sections for players to choose from: Open, U1600, U1200, U800 & Unrated, and U400 & Unrated. The AWS is one of the tournaments on the Scholastic Grand Prix schedule and, because of a new Maine Chess Association initiative, is offered to K-12 students at no cost to them--for either US Chess memberships or entry fees.

MECA Seeks Host Venues for Upcoming Tournaments

The Maine Chess Association needs your help! MECA is seeking school hosts for the following tournaments: The Kathy Richards Maine Girls' Chess Championship and the Maine Women's Championship on February 12, 2022; The Maine Individual Scholastic Chess Championship on March 19, 2022. Any school coaches or organizers interested in hosting one of these two tournaments should contact Michael Dudley, President, mdudley@chessmaine.org as soon as possible.

WCC Game 11: Carlsen is Five-Time World Champion

December 10, 2021

World Champion Magnus Carlsen won Game 11 of the World Chess Championship Match in Dubai, UAE. Carlsen retains his title and becomes a five-time World Champion. Nothing but the greatest respect goes to the Challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi but, as he has already admitted, he did not bring his best chess to this Match. The final score: Carlsen 7.5 - Nepomniachtchi 3.5.
