| In the sixth match of the PVC league, Orono High School beat Hampden Academy 9.5 - 2.5 and Bangor High School edged out Bapst 7 - 5. Orono leads the standings with twelve points followed by Bangor High School with seven and John Bapst with five. Hampden Academy is still scoreless. |  |

| The State Scholastic Chess Championship Organizing Committee, at a meeting on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the University of Maine, Orono, finalized the details of the state scholastic tournaments and made registration materials available. The dates of the tournaments are: Girls Championship March 1st, Team Championship March 8th, Individual Championship March 29th. |  |

The second Maine Intercollegiate Chess League Tournament, took place on Monday, December 10, 2007 in Castine, Maine at the Maine Maritime Academy campus. The final tally was the University of Maine (8) and Maine Maritime Academy (2) which gives UMaine a 2-0 lead in match play thus far. The time control was 20 moves in 30 minutes for one point or players could agree to play at G/60 for a total of two points. Due to a higher number of MMA players present, UMaine's team played multiple rounds. |

| With a population of 1,321,505 and 495 USCF members, Maine ranks fifth in the nation for per capita USCF members. Only Kentucky, New Mexico, Arizona and the District of Columbia can boast higher per capita percentages. Still, with only thirty-seven out of every 100,000 residents of Maine being a USCF member, there's lots of work left to do. Here are rankings based on percent population of the state as USCF members. On the 2007 Maine chess scene there were thirty-eight tournaments in seventy-one sections serving 945 players. In late January, a chess set will be distributed to each of the 200 fourth-graders in the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire in memory of Jeremy Alex, a 28-year-old who disappeared in the Maine wilderness three years ago. The Jeremy Alex Fund was established by the Portsmouth Rotary in 2005 in memory of Jeremy with the goal of helping at-risk children and teens. |
