Hello Maine Chess Association members! It is time to elect Directors of the Maine Chess Association for the upcoming term. The members we elect this month will assume their positions on January 1, 2024, and provide leadership to MECA for one year. Please complete the Official MECA Ballot by selecting four (4) candidates for the positions of MECA Director. Some candidates have chosen to submit brief statements, and those are provided below. 3rd Annual Kennebunk High School Chess Tournament Report

Forty-five players descended on Kennebunk High School on Saturday December 9, 2023 to play chess in the 3rd Annual Kennebunk High School Chess Tournament. The tournament was divided between the U800 and Open Sections. Here's the tournament report with crosstables.

18th Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament Report

A whopping 73 players turned out (the largest number in this event's history) to compete in the 18th Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament held in the tiny hamlet of Aurora, Maine on Saturday, December 9, 2023. The event was held in four sections: U400, U800, U1200, and Open and offered prizes for top U1600 players. Here's the tournament report with US Chess crosstables.

Maine Chess Association Seeks Candidates for MECA Director Positions

The Maine Chess Association is seeking candidates for four MECA director positions. MECA directors work conscientiously for the success of MECA programs, represent the membership at large, and attend quarterly MECA board meetings. The term is one year. If you are interested, please email a brief description of your interest and qualifications, to be included in the emailed ballot to MECA members, to MECA vice president Dan DeLuca at dcdeluca@yahoo.com before Saturday, December 9th, 2023. Ray Haines Wins Inaugural Maine Senior Chess Championship

November 18, 2023

Twenty players competed in the first-ever Maine Senior Chess Championship for players aged 50 and over on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Bangor High School. Ray Haines took the top spot with a perfect four wins in four rounds. This event was the qualifier for the Annual John T. Irwin Tournament of Senior State Champions to be held on July 27-30, 2024 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Maine Scholastic Grand Prix 2023-2024 Standings After 1st Tournament

The first tournament in the Maine Scholastic Grand Prix, the Reuy Yehle Bronco Cup played at Hampden Academy in Hampden on October 14th, is in the books and the current standings have been tabulated. Thanks to Maine Chess Association Director Justin Fisette for compiling the results.

MECA Seeking Bids to Host the Scholastic State Chess Championship Tournaments

November 1, 2023

The Maine Chess Association is accepting bid applications from schools and school chess programs to host its three flagship Scholastic Championship tournaments: The Kathy Richards Maine Girls' Chess Championship, held this year on February 10, 2024; The Maine Scholastic Team Chess Championships, held this year on March 9, 2024; and The Maine Scholastic Individual Chess Championships, held this year on March 23, 2024. Any bidding school or district should submit a proposal to Kate Ervin Kaplan at kervin@chessmaine.org no later than November 30, 2023, outlining how the school can accommodate each tournament if selected to host.

Farmington Open 2023 Tournament Report

Forty players turned out for the Farmington Open Chess Tournament played on October 14, 2023 at the Farmington Community Center. The event offered three sections of US Chess rated play. New Chess Tournaments in Downeast Maine

A partnership with the Cobscook Institute in Lubec, Maine has resulted in two new chess tournaments being added to the Maine chess event calendar. The tournaments are scheduled to take place on Monday, January 15, 2024 (MLK Jr. Day) and Saturday, February 10, 2024. Our sincere gratitude is extended to the Cobscook Institute and, in particular, Programs and Communications Coordinator Beana Hopkins for their enthusiastic support for creating opportunities and building a strong chess community in Downeast Maine.
