Isaiah Fallon Wins Cobscook Institute Winter Classic Chess Tournament

02.10.2024 Thirty-three players competed in the Cobscook Institute Winter Classic Chess Tournament on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the Cobscook Institute in Lubec, Maine. The tournament offered four sections: Open, U1200, U800, and U400 and attracted players from as far afield as North Yarmouth, Maine. Congratulations to Isaiah Fallon of Lamoine, Maine who scored a perfect 3.0 points in three rounds to take first place in the Open section. Here's the illustrated tournament report.

Thirty-three players competed in the Cobscook Institute Winter Classic Chess Tournament on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the Cobscook Institute in Trescott, Maine.

Isaiah Fallon topped the Open section of the Cobscook Institute Winter Classic Chess Tournament played on Saturday, February 10, 2024 with 3.0 points. Four players put up 2.0 points to finish equal second including: Nicolaas Luuring, Rafi Hopkins, Hoty Briggs, and Dimitri Smalley.

Amherst, Maine resident Zachary Grindal scored 2.5 points in the U1200 section sharing first place with Dr. Noah Dean a teacher at Washington Academy. Alba Briggs III and Marcus Teran rounded out the U1200 crosstable with half a point apiece.

In the thirteen-player U800 section--the tournament's largest--Finn Monahan of Trenton, Maine took first place honors with 4.0 points in as many games. Jason Yang and Anh Chu both from Washington Academy tied for second with 3.0 points.

Gabe Hopkins and Elam Monahan (age 3!) finished equal first in the U400 section with three wins apiece. Just off the leaders' pace was Sadie Monahan with 2.5 points.


Perfect in the Open section, Isaiah Fallon scored 3.0 points for clear first place.
