Together Place Offers Chess Club Meetings on Monday Mornings

Together Place in Bangor will be hosting pick-up chess games on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. Executive Director Sean Faircloth has extended an invitation to the public to drop in to play chess, to chess players and coaches who are willing to provide lessons, and to anyone willing to donate tournament standard chess equipment to the program.

US Championship Begins in St. Louis

On Wednesday, April 17th, the Opening Ceremony for the 2018 US Championship and US Women's Championship will take place at the St. Louis University Museum of Art. The eleven-round tournament will run from April 18-30, 2018 at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis. Twelve of the nation's strongest players including World Champion Challenger Fabiano Caruana, World #6 Hikaru Nakamura and World #7 Wesley So, will compete for the title of US Champion and twelve of America's top women players will vie for the title of US Women's Champion.

Matthew Fishbein is 2018 Maine State Champion!

The final round of the Maine State Closed Chess Championship came down to a dramatic showdown between the tournament's two top-rated players. After four rounds, the tournament leader Matthew Fishbein with 4.0 points played the black pieces vs Jarod Bryan with 3.5 points. The game ended in a draw and secured the championship for Fishbein. Bryan and Ben Amar tied for second. Ben Mock took first in Class B, Joseph Astumian was first in Class C and Andy Bryan claimed the U1400 prize.

Maine Championship Enters Final Round

The Maine Championship being played this weekend at the Best Western Plus Grand Hotel in Waterville is entering the final round. The group of players in contention for the championship have been whittled to the two top-seeded players Matthew Fishbein and Jarod Bryan who are playing each other in the last round.

Caruana Wins Grenke Classic

Just two weeks after winning the Candidates tournament to earn the right to challenge for the World Championship, Fabiano Caruana has won the Grenke Classic played in Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden, Germany from March 31- April 9, 2018. Caruana's next event is the US Championship scheduled for April 17-30 in St. Louis.

Bapst Impromptu #11 Tournament Report

Nine players turned out for the Bapst Impromptu Swiss #11 Tournament played on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. This tournament's format of offering one free and one fee section was dubbed "hybrid" by its organizer and director Michael Dudley. Aaron Spencer, Wyatt Hendrix, and Benjamin Mock shared first with 2.0 points apiece.

Maine Chess Hits US Chess MAP Trifecta

Each year the US Chess Federation selects affiliates in a number of categories as part of its Membership Appreciation Program (MAP). Winning affiliates are those who have signed up the most new and renewing US Chess members. For the category of Small State Affiliate, Maine was recognized with the top three places: 1. Maine Association of Chess Coaches 2. All Saints Catholic School Chess Club and 3. John Bapst Memorial High School Chess Club.

Fred Irons Gives a Gift of Art to the Rockland Public Library

Former University of Maine professor of electrical engineering Dr. Fred Irons has donated one of his paintings entitled Last Game to the Rockland Public Library in honor and memory of Harold Dondis. Mr. Dondis was a native of Rockland, Maine who attended Bowdoin College and Harvard Law School.
