The Women's World Championship is underway in Sochi, Russia. The sixty-four player tournament has been culled to just four players. The top seeds have been eliminated as have the two American players Tatev Abrahamyan and Irina Krush. The four remaining players are: Pia Cramling (Sweeden), Natalija Pogonina (Russia), Dronavalli Harika (India), and Mariya Muzychuk (Ukraine). |

This year's Maine State Scholastic Individual Chess Championships were played at the University of Maine Orono on Saturday, March 21st. State Champion titles were awarded in five categories: High School, High School U1200, Junior High School, K-6 and K-3. Twenty-eight players participated in the 2015 Saco Open played over the weekend of March 14-15 at the Hampton Inn in Saco, Maine. Two strong fields assembled in two sections: Open and U1750. GM Alexander Ivanov and IM David Vigorito shared the top spot in the Open with 3.5 points apiece--drawing with each other in round three. In the U1750 section, Dale Barkey and Mark Seedner posted an unbeaten 3.0 points to finish equal first. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crossables. |

Join us at the State Scholastic Individual Championships on Saturday, March 21st in the Memorial Union at the University of Maine Orono for Maine's premier screening of the 2014 film Algorithms. Algorithms is an inspiring documentary about the young blind chess players of India. The film will be run at noon, free of charge, in the lounge of the Memorial Union directly across from the information center. Algorithms has been described as beautiful to watch, engrossing, and a viewing pleasure. |

The Bobcat Lives Again Chess Tournament was played on March 3rd at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and attracted twenty players in two sections. Jarod Bryan topped the open section with 3.5 points and Mark Seedner won the combined U1600/U1200 section by the same score. Here's the tournament report with USCF crosstables. |

Each year the United States Chess Federation recognizes member affiliates in the following categories: Overall, Small State, and Individual Member. We are proud to announce that for the 2014 USCF Membership Appreciation Program the Maine Association of Chess Coaches (MACC), the organization that organizes and directs the state scholastic championships, has earned the top spot for generating new USCF memberships in the small state affiliate category. In addition, two other Maine affiliates: All Saints Catholic School and Airline Community School were also in the top ten. |

Four players competed in a "Super Quad" at the University of Maine at Augusta on Saturday, March 7th. Jarod Bryan came out on top with a perfect 3.0 points and William Ravn, Curt Brock, and Barry Magda all shared second place with 1.0 point.
