Scholastic Individuals State Championship Tournament Report

Seventy-four scholastic chess players gathered at the University of Maine Memorial Union on March 17th to duel for individual honors in K-3, K-6, K-8, and K-12 championship and Under 1200 sections. The hard-fought games often went down to the last moment of the allotted time, and saw both interesting and surprising results.

2nd Houlton Open Tournament Report

March 24, 2012

The 2nd Houlton Open, played on March 10th in Houlton, Maine, attracted six players all of whom were rated USCF 1600 or better. The four-round tournament was won by Roger Morin with 3.5 points. This event was the second Maine Chess Player of the Year tournament of 2012.

Scholastic Teams State Championship Report

The 2012 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships were held Saturday, March 3, in the Memorial Union, University of Maine, Orono. About 250 players supported by coaches and parents gathered despite the adverse weather conditions to contest team honors in the K-3, K-6, Junior High, and High School sections. Also at stake were individual achievements leading to invitation to the Individual Championships to be held at the same location on March 17. Each player competed in four games with team honors decided by total points scored for the four games or, in the case of the High School Championship section, by head-to-head match play.

Scholastic Teams State Championship is on!

The Scholastic Teams State Championship planned for Saturday, March 3rd at the University of Maine in Orono will take place as scheduled. In spite of the weather, a decision has been made to go ahead with the tournament. Please give yourself extra time to get to the venue and travel safe.

All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament Report

Fifty-two scholastic chess players competed in five sections (including a K-3 non-rated section) at the All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament played in Bangor on February 25th, 2012. This tournament has traditionally been a precursor to the state scholastic team championships which are scheduled for this Saturday, March 3rd at the University of Maine in Orono. Total Chess: Learn, Teach and Play the Easy 1-2-3 Way

John Herron, a retired computer programmer who has fond memories of camping at Acadia National Park, has written a book entitled Total Chess: Learn Teach and Play the Easy 1-2-3 Way. The book takes the reader through all phases of the game and explains concepts in a series of mini-lessons that are ideal as stand alone material for chess classes and one-on-one instruction. The text can be used as an entire course or specific lessons can be focused on to highlight a particular concept i.e., Rooks & Open Files or Knight vs. Pawns in the endgame.
