Maine Tops US Chess Member Appreciation Program

Through its Membership Appreciation Program (MAP), US Chess maintains a year-long membership drive and provides prizes and recognition for affiliates and members who sign up new or renew US Chess members. In the Small State Affiliate Standings, Maine holds the top three places having signed up or renewed 180 members so far in 2018. Congratulations and thanks to our players, organizers, and directors for making Maine a leader in the promotion of American chess!

In Memory: Charles Krauthammer

Charles Krauthammer, the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The Washington Post, passed away on June 21, 2018 at the age of sixty-eight. Mr. Krauthammer was best known for his insightful and often acerbic political commentary and wit. In addition to his work in the political arena, Mr. Krauthammer wrote many articles on chess including one each year for twenty years for Time magazine.

Ilyumzhinov Announces his Withdrawal from FIDE Elections

June 29, 2018

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov announced today that he is no longer in contention for the president of the World Chess Federation (FIDE). He threw his support behind the Russian candidate Arkaday Dvorkovich. The field is therefore narrowed to three candidates: Dvorkovich, FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos, and Nigel Short. Ilyumzhinov held the position for twenty-three years the second longest tenure of any FIDE president. The federation's first president, Alexander Rueb, was in office for two years longer.

Prince Edward Island Travelogue

Steve Abrahams now Writing for ChessBase

Former Maine resident Steve Abrahams is using his writing and chess expertise as a contributing chess journalist at ChessBase.com--one of the web's primer chess news and information sites. Steve was a student at Husson University in Bangor while he coached, taught, played and gave simultaneous exhibitions in Maine. A national expert and FIDE Trainer, Steve is also the co-author of "Become a Chess Champion."
