In Memory: Shelby Lyman (1936-2019)

Shelby Lyman, the chess master who hosted a popular show on live television as it followed the historic world championship chess match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, died on Aug. 11 in Johnson City, N.Y. He was 82. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Bapst Impromptu Swiss #18 & NM Juac Coaching Session

Beware of Chess Coach Scammers

Some members of the Maine chess coaching community have been receiving emails and text messages from a scammer asking for chess lessons. The scammer mails a check to the coach, then claims that he overpaid the coach and asks for the overpayment to be mailed back. Please be aware of this hoax and report suspicious activity to your local police department.

2019 U.S. Blind Chess Championship Tournament Report

The 2019 US Blind Chess Championship was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 20 and 21, 2019. The lead tournament directors, Alex Relyea and Nita Patel, invited Maine Chess Association President Michael Dudley to serve as an assistant TD. The four-round tournament saw Jessica Lauser, the 2018 Champion, defending her title with nine other competitors from across the country.

In Memory: Roger J Morin (1944-2019)

With great sadness we report the passing of one of the all-time great players and personalities of Maine chess Roger Morin. Roger passed away on Monday, July 8th. He embodied a larger-than-life force as an artist, player, teacher, coach, director, organizer, and supporter of the game near and far. He will be truly missed as a dear friend. Our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Roger's family and friends and his beloved wife Lois.

Houlton June Open Tournament Report

Three intrepid players competed in the Houlton June Open played at the Art Studio in Houlton on Saturday, June 29th. Roger Morin topped the crosstable with an unbeaten and untied 3.0 points. Roger Hardison put up 1.5 points for second and Ray Haines managed one draw for third place.
