Augusta Open Tournament Report

December 21, 2010

Thirteen players participated in two section of the Augusta Open played on December 11th, 2010. Phil Lowell and Curt Brock tied for first in the open section each scoring 3.0 points. Kathy Richards and Brian Roderick took first in the U1600 section also scoring 3.0 points in four games. This tournament hopefully signals the return of tournament chess to the Augusta area.

ChessMaine Interviews: 2010 Maine State Champion Lucas McCain

After three consecutive second-place finishes at the Maine High School Scholastic Championships, Lucas McCain, a former student at Yarmouth High School currently attending Washington University in St. Louis, won the 2010 Maine State Closed Championship played at the University of Maine in Orono on August 21-21, 2010. Lucas gives his perspective on the tournament, on his chess development and on his future goals--chess related and otherwise--in this in-depth interview.

PVC League Meets at Orono High School

December 14, 2010

The first meeting of the Penobscot Valley Chess League for the 2010-2011 season occurred at Orono High School on December 11th, 2010. Three high school teams were fielded--Bangor, John Bapst and Orono--and players competed in a swiss-style tournament with a time control of game in thirty minutes. This report contains results, images of all participants and three selected games.

Steve Abrahams Simul at Ellsworth Middle School on February 28, 2011

USCF Class A Player Steve Abrahams, USCF 1959, will play all comers in a simultaneous exhibition at Ellsworth Middle School on February 28th at 3:30 p.m. All ages and skill levels are welcome and encouraged to participate. Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament Report

The Sixth Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament held at the Airline Community School in Aurora on December 11, 2010 attracted forty players in four sections. Winners were: Steve Abrahams and Roger Morin (Open), John Ellison (U1400), Ian Youth (U1000) and Isaac Vaughn (U600). We bring you the richly-illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstable and selected games.

Cape Elizabeth Winter Open and RBO Tournament Report Featuring our New Chess Game Viewer

Twenty players were on hand for the Cape Elizabeth Winter Open and RBO played at the historic Bowery Beach School House on December 5th, 2010. Phil Lowell and Matthew Fishbein tied for first place each scoring 3.5 points in four rounds. Daniel Brett took clear first in the RBO section also scoring 3.5 points. Presque Isle/Houlton Tournament Report

December 6, 2010

The Presque Isle/Houlton Tournament played in both Maine cities over the weekend was unique in two ways: it featured a longer time control (G/120) and it was played in two different venues. Six players competed in this event playing between one and four rated games. Roger Morin came out on top with 3.5 points in four games.
