| Students and chaperones from Chess-in-the-Schools, the wildly successful program that teaches chess to kindergarten through eighth grade children in New York's inner-city public schools, recently made the trek to downeast Maine for a cultural and chessic exchange with some of Maine's top scholastic players. In four fun-filled days, students enjoyed USCF-rated chess, blitz, bughouse, two cookouts, a lobster bake and most importantly, each other's company. |

The New England Masters, a nine round FIDE rated swiss, is underway at the Holiday Inn Boston-Peabody and will run through August 17th. The tournament provides an opportunity for players to achieve Grandmaster and International Master norms. Max Enkin, co-champion at the James R.F. Quirk Memorial tournament played in South Portland, Maine on January 13, 2007, is on track for his first IM norm with four rounds to go.
Alba Briggs and the Washington County Chess Federation are at it again. This time the tournament is the St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic scheduled for this Saturday, August 18th, 2007 at the Crohn Family Conference Center in Perry, Maine. The first round of this four-round, four-section tournament begins at 9:00 a.m. and the pre-registration deadline has been extended until August 17th.
Maine's representatives to the Denker Tournament of High School Champions and the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls both finished above their seeded positions based on rating. The 2007 Maine High School Co-Champion Cullen Edes finished tied for 13th place in a very strong field of fifty-one players including six masters and twelve experts. The 2007 Maine Girls Champion Lily Briggs also bested her seeded position of forty-sixth with a tied for thirty-fifth place finish out of forty-nine players.
