Chess-in-the-Schools comes to Maine

Students and chaperones from Chess-in-the-Schools, the wildly successful program that teaches chess to kindergarten through eighth grade children in New York's inner-city public schools, recently made the trek to downeast Maine for a cultural and chessic exchange with some of Maine's top scholastic players. In four fun-filled days, students enjoyed USCF-rated chess, blitz, bughouse, two cookouts, a lobster bake and most importantly, each other's company.

St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic

The luxurious Crohn Family Conference Center in Perry, Maine was the venue for the first St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic on August 18, 2007. Connecticut resident Tom Little topped the seventeen-player field with 3.5 points. He was closely followed by a group of four players tieing for second place with 3.0 points. In Memoriam: Franklin J. Richards

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Franklin J. Richards at the age of seventy-two. Mr. Richards was a life member of the United States Chess Federation and for many years was very active in Maine tournament and scholastic chess. He had a passion for the game and he shared that passion with others. Mr. Richards will be sorely missed.

GM Leonid Kritz wins New England Masters

August 22, 2007

GM Leonid Kritz scored seven points in nine rounds to win this year's New England Masters played at the Holiday Inn Boston-Peabody August 13-17, 2007. Following GM Kritz a half point back were GM Alexander Shabalov and IM Dean Ippolito. IM Robert Hess scored six points to take clear forth and IM Josh Friedel and FM Ray Robinson tied for fifth with five and a half.

New England Masters

August 15, 2007

The New England Masters, a nine round FIDE rated swiss, is underway at the Holiday Inn Boston-Peabody and will run through August 17th. The tournament provides an opportunity for players to achieve Grandmaster and International Master norms. Max Enkin, co-champion at the James R.F. Quirk Memorial tournament played in South Portland, Maine on January 13, 2007, is on track for his first IM norm with four rounds to go.

St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic Reminder

Alba Briggs and the Washington County Chess Federation are at it again. This time the tournament is the St. Croix River Valley International Chess Classic scheduled for this Saturday, August 18th, 2007 at the Crohn Family Conference Center in Perry, Maine. The first round of this four-round, four-section tournament begins at 9:00 a.m. and the pre-registration deadline has been extended until August 17th.

Denker and Polgar Tournament Report

August 14, 2007

Maine's representatives to the Denker Tournament of High School Champions and the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls both finished above their seeded positions based on rating. The 2007 Maine High School Co-Champion Cullen Edes finished tied for 13th place in a very strong field of fifty-one players including six masters and twelve experts. The 2007 Maine Girls Champion Lily Briggs also bested her seeded position of forty-sixth with a tied for thirty-fifth place finish out of forty-nine players.

FM Allan Savage lectures at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School

FIDE Master and Correspondence Chess International Master Allan Savage gave a scintillating lecture entitled The Importance of Pawn Structure in the library of the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School on Friday evening August 10, 2007. FM Savage stressed the fact that pawn structure helps determine middle game plans and appropriate piece placement and used two grandmaster games to illustrate Maroczy Bind structures.
