Bapst Impromptu Quads Report

Eight players nicely rounded out two quad sections at the Bapst Impromptu Quads played at John Bapst High School on May 24, 2018. Aaron Spencer won Quad 1 with a perfect 3.0 points. In Quad 2, Wyatt Hendrix and Tristan Cousineau shared equal first with 2.5 points.

Ju Wenjun is Women's World Champion

Ju Wenjun has won the Women's World Championship Match played between May 2-20, 2018 in Shanghai and Chongqing, China. Just edging her opponent Tan Zhongyi in ten games by the score of 5.5 to 4.5, Wenjun became the 17th Women's World Champion.

"I Am More: Facing Stigma"

"I Am More: Facing Stigma," is the title of a photography show on exhibit at Speedwell Projects on Forest Avenue in Portland through May 12th. The show, which highlights the work of Portland photographer Lissy Thomas, features 22 black-and-white portraits of locals affected by mental health challenges. One of the photographs has the following accompanying statement: "I am Kathy. I am a friend. I am a chess advocate. I am a rock enthusiast. I am an artist. I am a survivor of post traumatic stress. I am a peaceful warrior."

Seeking MECA Interim President

Those interested in serving in this capacity should send an email with a brief statement to dcdeluca@yahoo.com by Friday, May 18, 2018. Per the MECA Constitution, the Policy Board will choose a qualified candidate to serve in the interim until the MECA elections in December, 2018.

Behind the Scenes at the U.S. Championship with Alex Relyea

Dan Robbins is Inaugural Crusader Cup Champion

Wyatt Hendrix and Brian Hurst tied for first in the John Bapst Open played on Saturday, May 5th at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. The big story, however, was Dan Robbins's win of the 2017-2018, four-tournament, Crusader Cup Series!

Sam Shankland and Nazi Paikidze are US Champions

Sam Shankland and Nazi Paikidze are the 2018 US Champion and US Women's Champion. For Shankland, a twenty-six year old from Berkeley, California, it was the biggest win of his career and the first time he has cracked the FIDE 2700 mark. Paikidze finished the tournament equal with Annie Wang necessitating a rapid chess and sudden death 'Armageddon' playoff in which she won to clinch the title.

Together Place Offers Chess Club Meetings on Monday Mornings
