MECA Augusta Series Fall Quads Tournament Report

Twenty-six players turned out to compete in the MECA Augusta Series Fall Quads, played on November 22, 2008 at the Ground Round Restaurant in Augusta, Maine. Topping Quads 1-6 were Adam Schaff, Barry Magda, Jim DuBois, Akagi Kayashima, Kris Fecteau and Stephen Kaluzynski. The Augusta Series is the brainchild of Portland Chess Club President, Lee Doucette. MECA Augusta Series Fall Quads *Reminder*

The Augusta Series resumes this weekend with the Fall Quads to be played on Saturday, November 22 at the Ground Round in Augusta. Three rounds at a time control of Game in 75 minutes makes for a pleasant day of chess and you'll even have time to get in a little holiday shopping. Hope to see you there.

Eastern Maine Open Tournament Report

Thirty-two players competed in three sections at the Eastern Maine Open played at the University of Maine, Orono on October 25, 2008. Roger Morin, Wesley Parker/Bruce Sherwood/Gheorghe Teodoruscu and Robert Freccero came out on top in the Open, U1400 and U1000 sections. Sixteenth Annual Deer Isle-Stonington Lacy Greenlaw Chess-A-Thon

Now a long-standing tradition in downeast Maine, The Deer Isle-Stonington Chess-A-Thon took place from 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 7 - 6:00 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School. This year's event was named in honor of Lacy Greenlaw, a former Mariner chessplayer who passed away at the age of 21 after a long struggle with cancer.

WCC Bonn Round 11: Vishy Anand World Chess Champion!

Playing the white pieces in game 11, Viswanathan Anand, after a complicated struggle, navigated the game into the safe harbor of a drawn position to retain the title of Classical World Chess Champion and take his rightful position amongst the game's greats. Congratulations Vishy!

WCC Bonn Round 10: Not So Fast!

It's the stuff champions are made of--in a absolute do-or-die situation Kramnik tallied his first win of the match to continue to fight on for the title of World Chess Champion. Anand essayed a Nimzo-Indian in response to Kramnik's 1. d4 but ran into trouble both on the board and on the clock. It ain't over yet!

WCC Bonn Round 9: Anand Ekes Out a Draw

With the World Championship hanging in the balance, Vishy Anand managed to recover from a clearly worse position with the white pieces and hold the draw. Kramnik will need to run the table in the next three straight games to force the match into tiebreaks. If Anand can win or draw game 10, the match will conclude before 12 games are completed.

WCC Bonn Round 8: 39-Move Draw

With each passing round the World Championship Match is moving inexorably toward its conclusion. In order for Kramnik to send the match to tiebreaks he would have to hold Anand to only one draw over the next four games. After round 8 it's Anand 5.5 Kramnik 2.5.

WCC Bonn Round 7: Draw; Anand 5.0 Kramnik 2.0

The two players agreed to a draw after white's 37th move. Anand, playing white for the second game in a row because the midpoint of the match has been passed, did have a positional and material (one pawn) advantage but agreed to a draw as the position was blocked.

WCC Bonn Round 6: Anand Wins Again

Anand has stunned Kramnik with yet another win--his third in the last four games. The World Champion has extended his lead in the match to an almost insurmountable 4.5-1.5. Kramnik will need nothing short of a miracle to turn this ship around.
