The 2013 FIDE World Chess Championship match will take place on November 7-26, 2013 in Chennai, India. It is a match for the highest crown in chess between the Defending Champion Viswanathan Anand of India and the Challenger Magnus Carlsen of Norway.

President Gerald R. Ford declared October 9th, 1976 as the first National Chess day stating, "For both professionals and amateurs, chess is a game that sharpens the mind, tests human faculties and encourages healthy competition. It has captivated the attention of players and spectators worldwide and will continue to do so as long as competition and excellence challenge mankind." To commemorate National Chess Day this year, the Brewer Community School hosted a tournament that attracted twenty-eight players in two sections.

Maine's newest chess club is up and running at BAM! (Books-A-Million) at the Bangor Mall. The club meets Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. until close (10:00 p.m.) and attracts a wide variety of players from beginners to experts. While you are there you can check out both the cafe offerings and the ample selection of chess books on the stacks.

The 2013 Eastern Maine Open was held on Saturday, October 5th at the University of Maine in Orono. Nineteen players competed in two sections. The open section was won by Roger Morin with 3.5 points and Vincent Paris and Lois Morin shared first in the U1000 section with 3.0 points.
