Lee Doucette is Maine Chess Player of the Year for 2006
02.02.07 Leroy F. (Lee) Doucette has been named Maine Chess Player of the Year for 2006. Participating in all five Maine Chess Player of the Year tournaments, Doucette garnered 30.0 points just outpacing Ruben Babayan who scored 29.3 points. Commenting on his success, the champion quipped, "90% of life is just showing up every day." Here are the event and scoring details as well as a complete breakdown of final results.

The Maine Chess Player of the Year competition is an annual year-long contest that rewards both consistency and performance in Maine chess tournamnets. The events for 2006 were: The Portland Quick Chess Open on January 14th, The Maine Championship (closed) on May 22nd, The Down East Open and Down East Rated Beginners Open on June 17th, The Maine Rating Floor Open and The Maine Rated Beginners Open on October 21st and The Eastern Maine Open on October 28th. Players chose either the Rated Beginners Open sections or the Open sections for a total of five tournaments.
The scoring system is based on games and points earned as follows: One point is awarded for each game played, forced bye or forfeit win and 1/2 point is awarded for each requested bye. In each game played, one point is awarded for each win and 1/2 point for each draw. Quick chess events (those played at time control of Game in 10 to Game in 29) are weighted at 50% of regular games and points.
Doucette played in all 21 elegible games amassing 9 tournament points for a total of 30.0 Maine Chess Player of the Year points. His closest rival, Ruben Babayan out performed him scoring 12.3 tournament points but played in four less games and therefore was awarded 29.3 Maine Chess Player of the Year points (12.3 + 17 games). In third place was Lucas McCain who received 28 points.
