In Memory: Steven R. Miller 1950-2024

We are saddened to report that Steven R. Miller, former president of the Waterville Chess Club, prolific author, and chess friend and patron, has passed away. Steve was multi-talented and had expertise in many areas including writing, publishing, information technology, programming, library science in many others. Cobscook Winter Classic Chess Tournament Featured in the Mount Desert Islander

MLK Day Chess Tournament at Lincolnville Central School

February 18, 2024

On Jan 15, 2024 Lincolnville Central School hosted the biggest-ever MLK Day Chess Tournament with the help of parents and chess coaches. We had 70 contestants: 54 boys, 16 girls and a whopping 12 kids in K/1! (The old record was 4!) It was a fun tournament designed to get lots of games in between 9 AM & noon. While it may have seemed chaotic at times, we tried to keep the time between games to a minimum. Most kids played at least eight games while some played fourteen to eighteen!

Rebecca Stanley and Molly Tefft Win Maine Women's and Girls' Chess Championships

Congratulations to Rebecca Stanley and Molly Teft who won the Maine Women's and Girls' Chess Championships played on Saturday February 10, 2024 at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. Mya Birchacek won the K-6 section of the Girls' Championship with a perfect 4.0 points in four games. Here's the illustrated tournament report with US Chess crosstables.

Isaiah Fallon Wins Cobscook Institute Winter Classic Chess Tournament

February 10, 2024

Thirty-three players competed in the Cobscook Institute Winter Classic Chess Tournament on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the Cobscook Institute in Lubec, Maine. The tournament offered four sections: Open, U1200, U800, and U400 and attracted players from as far afield as North Yarmouth, Maine. Congratulations to Isaiah Fallon of Lamoine, Maine who scored a perfect 3.0 points in three rounds to take first place in the Open section. Here's the illustrated tournament report.

Roger and Lois Morin Memorial Chess Tournament Report

Eighteen chess players attended the Roger and Lois Morin Memorial tournament at the Memorial Union Hall in the Bangor room on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono on December 2nd, 2023. Wyatt Hendrix and Charlie Creswell won the Open section with 3.5 Points. Reese Pelletier played in his first ever US Chess tournament and dominated with 3 out of 4 points in the U1500 section to start their chess career!
