UMA Quads Tournament Report

Twenty-nine players competed in the seven-section UMA Quads Tournament on November 14th at the University of Maine at Augusta. Jarod Bryan and Wiliam Ravn shared the top spot in Quad 1 as did Phil Lowell and Barry Magda in Quad 2. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables and three selected games.

November Houlton Open Tournament Report

Eight players, including Cynthia Cui who has just returned from the World Youth Championships in Greece, competed in the November Houlton Open at the Art Studio in Houlton on Saturday, November 14, 2015. Cui shared first place with Roger Morin both scoring 2.5 points in the three round event. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.

Dick Powell and Gilda Garcia Become King and Queen

It is with great joy that we report the marriage of legendary Deer Isle-Stonington chess coach Dick Powell and Gilda Garcia. The newlyweds took their vows at the First Congregational Church in Deer Isle on Saturday, November 14th then celebrated with family and friends at Flex It Cafe and Bakery in Ellsworth. Here are some images from their first day as husband and wife.

ChessDrop is Here!

An innovative new free chess app for smartphones has been created by Matt Henderson and the folks at ChessDrop. ChessDrop is an online database that allows you to privately store and share your games. You can record individual games using a web browser or mobile apps for iOS and Andriod. You can also input multiple games by uploading a PGN database. After inputting your games, you can share them effortlessly with a click.

Carissa Yip and Cynthia Cui Compete in World Youth Championships

Carissa Yip (Massachusetts) and Cynthia Cui (New Brunswick) are competing in the Girls Under 12 section of the World Youth and Cadet Championships in Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece from October 25 - November 6, 2015. Both players have been previously mentioned on the pages of ChessMaine.net. Yip, who graced the cover of the August 2015 edition of ChessLife as the USCF's youngest female master, is seeded third in a field of 120 international players. Cui, who has played in tournaments in Houlton, Maine, is seeded 110th in that same field.

Chess at the Common Ground Fair

Each fall during the third weekend in September, the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) hosts the Common Ground Fair. The Fair is a celebration of rural life. In the Children's Homesteading Area under the cucumber magnolia tree, a two-board chess table was set up in part to impress on fair goers that part of rural living and homesteading is having the time to sit down and enjoy the sixty-four squares. The chess table was very popular attracting players of all ages. At some points there were folks watching and waiting for their turn to take a crack.

A YouTube Chess Video with over 1 Million Views

GM Max Dlugy hosts Banter Blitz sessions on the Internet Chess Club's YouTube channel. During a recent session, GM Dlugy was lured into an obscure line in the Budapest Defense by a well-prepared player rated ICC 1400. First the GM loses his queen, then he gets mated! Watch this instructive and very entertaining video with the confidence that class players can and do take down internationally titled players.

Brewer National Chess Day Tournament

Eighteen players came out to celebrate National Chess Day by competing in the Brewer National Chess Day Tournament at the Brewer Community School on October 10th. Saco National Chess Day Tournament

On October 9, 1976 President Ford declared National Chess Day. Thirty-nine years later Mainers celebrated with two National Chess Day Tournaments--one in Saco and one in Brewer. We detail the Saco tournament in this report and will have the Brewer Chess Day tournament report coming soon.

August Houlton Open Tournament Report

On August 22nd the Eastern Maine Chess Association hosted a three-round, G/75 tournament in Houlton in which the average rating of the participants was USCF 1801--not bad for the farthest reaches of northern Maine! The tournament was won by Aaron Spencer with a perfect 3.0 points. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.
