In Memorial: Harold Dondis (1922-2015)

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of one of Maine's great chess sons Harold Dondis. Harold was born in Rockland, Maine and educated in Rockland Public Schools. He graduated from Bowdoin College and Harvard Law School. Probably most well known for his Boston Globe chess column which he wrote for fifty years, Harold was a lover of the royal game. Donations may be made in his memory to the Rockland Public Library, Rockland, ME 04841 or the Boylston Chess Club, Suite B101, Norris St, No. Cambridge, MA 02140.

Record Turnout at 11th Annual Aurora Winter Solstice

With sixty-two USCF members participating, the 11th Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament was the largest tournament, save the spring scholastic championships, that Maine has seen since 2004. Many thanks to all the players, parents, coaches, and volunteers for making this tournament a great success. Jarod Bryan won the open section and clinched the title of Maine Chess Player of the Year. Chess at Ellsworth Middle School

The first of three informal chess gatherings for students in K-8th grade took place at the Ellsworth Middle School on Tuesday, December 8th from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Students, parents, and coaches from Aurora, Bucksport, Deer Isle-Stonington, Ellsworth, and Lamoine attended.These gatherings give students an opportunity to experience and practice in near-tournament conditions in the run up to the state scholastic championships held in March at the University of Maine in Orono.

Breaking News: FIDE President Steps Down

December 6, 2015

The president of the World Chess Federation, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, has stepped down after the US Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on him effective November 25, 2015. In a statement released today Nigel Freedman the Executive Director of FIDE states that Ilyumzhinov will withdraw from any legal, financial and business operations of FIDE until such time as [he] is removed from the Office of Foreign Assets Control sanction list.

Wanted: MECA Policy Board Nominees

The Maine Chess Association is looking for candidates for all policy board positions. Officer positions (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) have terms of two years. Director terms are one year and are voted upon at annual meetings unless there is a vacancy which will be included in the ballot for officer positions. UMA Quads Tournament Report

November 17, 2015

Twenty-nine players competed in the seven-section UMA Quads Tournament on November 14th at the University of Maine at Augusta. November Houlton Open Tournament Report

Eight players, including Cynthia Cui who has just returned from the World Youth Championships in Greece, competed in the November Houlton Open at the Art Studio in Houlton on Saturday, November 14, 2015. Dick Powell and Gilda Garcia Become King and Queen

It is with great joy that we report the marriage of legendary Deer Isle-Stonington chess coach Dick Powell and Gilda Garcia. The newlyweds took their vows at the First Congregational Church in Deer Isle on Saturday, November 14th then celebrated with family and friends at Flex It Cafe and Bakery in Ellsworth. ChessDrop is Here!

An innovative new free chess app for smartphones has been created by Matt Henderson and the folks at ChessDrop. ChessDrop is an online database that allows you to privately store and share your games. You can record individual games using a web browser or mobile apps for iOS and Andriod. You can also input multiple games by uploading a PGN database. After inputting your games, you can share them effortlessly with a click.
