World Chess Championship Preview

The World Chess Championship Match 2016, held from November 11-30 at the Fulton Market Building in the historic Seaport District of New York City, will be contested by 25 year old reigning champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway and his challenger, 26 year old Sergey Karjakin of Russia. These players, having come of age in the era of super-strong chess software programs, represent a new frontier for the future of chess.

Chess at the 2016 Common Ground Country Fair

At this year's Common Ground Country Fair in Unity, Maine, a first-of-its-kind chess tournament was held on Saturday, September 24th in the Children's Homsteading Area. The non-rated event was attended by six brave competitors and a good-sized crowd of onlookers cheering the players on. The three round event was won by Luke Hankins with a perfect 3.0 points. Former Maine Player and Coach now Managing Miami Professional Chess Team

The newest addition to the United States Professional Chess League is the Miami Champions. Former Maine player and coach Steve Abrahams is Co-Managing the team with his business partner Bryan Tillis. We caught up with Steve to ask him about this new venture and his multi-faceted involvement in chess.

ChessMaine Interviews: Alex Relyea

Alex Relyea has long been a powerhouse in the world of local, regional, national, and international chess. In addition to being a very respectable player, he is an organizer, US Chess tournament director, FIDE arbiter, and sits on the US Chess Ethics, Elections, Tournament Director Certification, Fide Events, and Anti-Cheating committees. A delegate to US Chess from the state of New Hampshire, a Trustee of the Life Member Assets, a member of the board of the New Hampshire Chess Association and Treasurer of the New England Chess Association are just some of his chess-related responsibilities (and we haven't even mentioned correspondence chess!). National Chess Day in Brewer

National Chess day was celebrated in Brewer with a chess tournament held on October 8, 2016 at Machias Savings Bank that attracted twenty-one players. The tournament ran in three sections--two quads and a U1000 section. Roger Morin topped Quad 1, Joseph Powell took the honors in Quad 2 and Kaleb Pendleton won the U100 section. September Houlton Open Tournament Report

Seven players with an average rating of USCF 1811 competed in the September Houlton Open at the Art Studio in Houlton, Maine on September 17th. Chess Champs Documentary Screening in Deer Isle

A documentary film that features coach Dick Powell and follows the 2012-2013 season of the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners chess team will be shown at the Reach Performing Arts Center (249 North Deer Isle Road) in Deer Isle, Maine at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 9th.
