Caravel Middle School in Carmel, Maine Seeks Chess Instructor

Caravel Middle School in Carmel, Maine is looking for a chess instructor to guide their chess program. The CMS Chess Team will meet Mondays through Thursdays from 2:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. They are hoping to start instruction in mid-November and are looking forward to competing in the State Scholastic Team Championships in March of 2019. Brewer Community School National Chess Day Tournament Report

Twenty-seven players turned out to celebrate National Chess Day at the Brewer Community School National Chess Day Tournament on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Machias Savings Bank in Breer. The tournament had three sections: an Open Quad, U1000, and K-6 Unrated. Winners were Bill Hartt, Kaleb Pendleton, and Joshua Lorenzo respectively.

Dvorkovich Elected FIDE President

Arkady Dvorkovich has been elected as FIDE President at the FIDE General Assembly in Batumi, Georgia. Delegates from the World Chess Federation elected Dvorkovich with 56.9% of the vote. Dvorkovich's rival, current FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos, received 43.1 % This election result officially begins the post-Ilyumzhinov era of the World Chess Federation.

World Chess Olympiad 2018

September 24, 2018

The 43rd Chess Olympiad began today in Batumi, Georgia. One hundred fifty teams, representing over one hundred eighty nations, are participating in each the Open and Women's sections. The United States is the defending champion in the Open section and is also the number-one seeded team with an average rating of 2777. The U.S. Women's team is seeded 10th in the Women's section with an average rating of 2382.

Roger Morin Wins Houlton Invitational

Six players competed in the Houlton Invitational Chess Tournament played at the Art Studio in Houlton on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Roger Morin went undefeated with two wins and two draws to take first place. Cynthia Cui and Ray Haines tied for second with 2.5 points apiece. Matthew Fishbein Wins Saco Quick Chess Tournament

Chess comes in many forms: standard, 960, bughouse, and blindfold to name a few and many time controls: correspondence, standard, quick, blitz, and lightning. On Saturday, September 15, 2018, nineteen players gathered in Saco, Maine to try their hand at a six-round quick chess tournament with a time control of G/25 and a 3-second delay. When the dust cleared, Matthew Fishbein stood at the top of the crosstable with 5.5 points.

Weatherbee Elementary School in Hampden Draws 80 Students for Chess Club Meeting
