Game 5 of the World Chess Championship ended in a draw. The opening was another Ruy Lopez Anti-Marshall System in which Carlsen tried what he thought would be the lesser-analyzed 8...Rb8. Unfortunately for him, Nepo was booked to the nines on this line and pressed the World Champion on a course of grim defense. The players shook on the draw when a threatened triple-repeat-of-position occurred after White's 43rd move. |

Game 4 of the World Chess Championship marks the 18th straight draw in World Championship matches (2016, 2018, and 2021) in games with classical time controls. Online chatter has been discussing "draw death" and there is a growing sentiment amongst spectators, and amongst the players as well, who are looking forward to the Match's first decisive game. The Match score stands at 2 points apiece. |

Game 3 of the World Chess Championship ended in a draw after White's 41st move. In a post-game interview, Nepo, who played the White pieces, felt that he got something out of the opening. After White played 21.h3 the position reached objective equality and remained that way into the same-color Bishop endgame when the players called it quits. Tomorrow is a rest day. The Match, now at 1.5 points apiece, resumes on Tuesday, November 30th. |

Game 2 of the World Chess Championship was an exciting one with three results possible throughout most of the game. Carlsen sacked the exchange on 20.Rb1 and pressed to the point where Black seemed to be in serious trouble. To Nepomniachtchi's credit, the Challenger weathered a complicated onslaught and navigated to a theoretically drawn endgame. |

George Cunningham was a titan of the Maine chess community in many ways. A professor at the University of Maine, George Cunningham worked to organize chess in Maine and briefly served as Executive Director of the United States Chess Federation, helping to save the Federation from organizational calamity. In Maine, the George Cunningham Chess Club at the University of Maine and the George Cunningham Memorial Trophies are named in his honor. Those trophies, meant to honor the Maine Scholastic Team Champions every March, have been given a fresh new look, thanks to master woodworker Andrew DeMaris and a generous sponsorship from Hartt Transportation. |

The 2021 FIDE World Championship takes place November 24-December 16, 2021 in Dubai, UAE. The championship will be played for a €2 million prize fund between the reigning world champion GM Magnus Carlsen and the challenger GM Ian Nepomniachtchi, who won the 2020-2021 FIDE Candidates Tournament. Game 1 was drawn after 45 moves. |

Maine Chess Association's own Wyatt Hendrix took first at the 2021 New Hampshire Amateur tournament played on November 6, 2021 in Manchester, NH. In a field of twenty-six players in the Championship section, Hendrix scored a perfect four points in four rounds--that's undefeated and untied. We congratulate Wyatt on this tournament victory and for representing Maine so ably. |

As part of the Craft Maker's Gambit: An Exhibition Inspired by the Game of Chess at Maine Craft Portland (MCP) at 521 Congress Street in Portland, the Maine Chess Association has teamed up with MCP to invite special guest WGM and 2017 US Women's Chess Champion Sabina Foisor to Portland. WGM Foisor will give a lecture on Thursday, December 2nd and take on all comers in a series of blitz chess (G/3) matches on Friday, December 3rd. Here's more information and registration links. |

An organization called Age Friendly Communities of the Lower Kennebec has installed three concrete chess tables and chairs at the corner of Front and Elm Streets in downtown Bath. This community building initiative hopes to connect people of all ages in a friendly and welcoming environment. ChessMaine is working with community leaders in Portland to create a similar installation in a downtown public park. |
