Thirty players turned out for the St. Valentine's Day Massacre Chess Tournament on Saturday, February 7, 2009. (Room availability took precedence this year over historical accuracy.) The format was six quads and a six-player swiss each player playing three games at game in 60 minutes.

3rd Annual Joe Brown Memorial Chess Tournament

Great food was only half the story at the 3rd Annual Joe Brown Memorial Chess Tournament held on January 24, 2009 at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School. The other half, of course, was the great chess played by the preschool-8th grade competitors.

MLK 2009 Tournament Report

"Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." That postal service motto could just as well apply to the brave chess players who came out for tournament chess at the 10th Annual MLK Day Chess Tournament on January 19, 2009 despite a 20-inch snowfall in the Bangor area.

10th Annual MLK Tournamnet *Reminder*

John Bapst New Year's Tournament Report

January 10, 2009

Starting the new year off right, 34 players competed in the 2009 John Bapst New Year's Tournament on January 4, 2009 at John Bapst High School in Bangor. Two players well know in Maine chess circles found themselves at the top of the crosstable after the final round. Former State Champion Roger Morin and 2008 Chess Player of the Year Barry Magda both scored 3.5 points to share 1st place. George Spahn was perfect in the U1000 section with 4.0 points.

Aurora Winter Solstice Carries on Despite Widespread Power Outages

A menacing ice storm churned through the northeast leaving thousands in Maine without power. That didn't stop thirty-eight brave chess players from venturing out to participate in the Fourth Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament played at the Airline Community School in Aurora, Maine on Saturday, December 14, 2008. Based on comments from the players, the scenery, the chess and the food was worth the trip.

Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament *Reminder*

December 11, 2008

The Fourth Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament is scheduled to take place this Saturday, December 13th at the Airline Community School in Aurora, Maine. There will be four sections (U600/Unrated, U1000, U1400 and Open) with prizes in each including wooden chess pieces to the winners of the lower sections and cash prizes in the Open. The tournament will take place as scheduled. The power is on and as of 6:00 p.m. on Friday high temps have melted all snow and ice.
