| Cheverus High School, located in Portland, hosted a six round, G/10 quick chess tournament held on Saturday, April 2. The event helped raise funds to sponsor the Cheverus High School team trip to the National Scholastic team tournament being held in Nashville, Tennessee on April 29 - May 1. The Cheverus team earned the trip by winning the High School Championship section of the 2011 Maine Scholastic Team Tournament in Orono on March 5. | |

Cognition is an international journal that publishes theoretical and experimental papers on the study of the mind. It covers a wide variety of subjects concerning all the different aspects of cognition, ranging from biological and experimental studies to formal analysis. In this article the Einstellung (set) effect is considered using chess players as test subjects. The Einstellung (set) effect occurs when the first idea that comes to mind, triggered by similar features of a problem, prevents a better solution from being found. |
| Alan Schalk defeated Jim Dubois in the final round of the Maine State Championship, played in Augusta on April 9-10, 2011, to score 5.0 points and become the 2011 State Champion. Matthew Fishbein, the tournament's youngest player, finished a clear second with 4.0 points. Richard Judy and Ruben Babayan tied for third with 3.5 points - both of which included half-point byes. Finishing with 3.0 were Jim Dubois, Barry Magda, Curt Brock, Don Plummer, and Dan Lavallee. | |

Six players paticipated in the UMA State Championship Warm-Up Tournament played at the University of Maine's Augusta campus on April 3, 2011. The original idea was to coordinate with interested students and the university community as an introduction to chess tournaments. As it turned out, the event became more of a warm-up to the state championship. The organizers indicate that more of these tournaments are in the pipeline--stay tuned to ChessMaine.net for details. |

The tournaments in Aroostook County keep on rolling thanks to tournament organizers and directors Roger and Lois Morin and the willing participants. | Seventy-three scholastic chess players gathered at the University of Maine Memorial Union in Orono on March 19, 2011 to duel for individual honors in K-3, K-6, K-8, and K-12 championship and Under 1200 sections. The hard-fought games often went down to the last moment of the allotted time, and saw both interesting and surprising results. | |
