A menacing ice storm churned through the northeast leaving thousands in Maine without power. That didn't stop thirty-eight brave chess players from venturing out to participate in the Fourth Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament played at the Airline Community School in Aurora, Maine on Saturday, December 14, 2008. Based on comments from the players, the scenery, the chess and the food was worth the trip. |

The Fourth Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament is scheduled to take place this Saturday, December 13th at the Airline Community School in Aurora, Maine. There will be four sections (U600/Unrated, U1000, U1400 and Open) with prizes in each including wooden chess pieces to the winners of the lower sections and cash prizes in the Open. The tournament will take place as scheduled. The power is on and as of 6:00 p.m. on Friday high temps have melted all snow and ice. |

The Penobscot Valley Conference High School Chess League's season is underway. The four high schools that participate in the league are: Bangor High School, Hampden Academy, John Bapst Memorial High School and Orono High School. Match 1 was played at Hampden Academy on Monday, December 1st. Here's the illustrated report with results. |
