The 2005-2006 Maine Chess League Championship was held on Saturday, April 29th at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. When the dust settled it was the Saco Valley Chess Club Tigers taking the trophy and the championship with a perfect 2-0.

While in high school, she won the first ever top female trophy at the state scholastic championships. Since then, Kathy Richards has become Maine's higest rated female player. In addition to playing chess, she does some boring stuff too, like white water rafting and skydiving! "Chess is," she says, "really for people who are thrill seekers."
Recently we brought you the story of the Portland Chess Club's efforts to get back on track by calling a meeting to discuss establishing a club structure and determining a consistent meeting place and time. On April 22, a core group of Portland chess players got together to help make this happen. Here are the notes from the organizational meeting to save this great club.
The top rated player in each section plowed through their respective opponents without a loss or a draw but that's where the predictability ended. Lots of interesting games, upsets and results you might not expect were all part of the Airline Community School's Fundraising Tournament to help send the K-3 State Champion Team to the Elementary School National Championships in Denver. Another feature of the tournament was an astounding chess set collection from around the world.
Chess was on the agenda at the State House as State Scholastic Champion Teams were recognized and congratulated by senators, representatives and the Governor of Maine himself, the Honorable John E. Baldacci.

The 2006 Maine Scholastic Championship for Girls is in the history books. Twenty-seven players competed and Margaret Bryan of Airline Community School swept the field with a perfect 4-0. Close on her heels were Lily Briggs of Maranatha Homeschool Fellowship with 3.5 and a pack of six players with 3.0. We bring you the full illustrated report with crosstables.
Those were the sentiments at the John Bapst High School Blitz-Bughouse Chessathon. Players helped raise money for a team trip to the High School National Championship Tournament in Milwaukee.
