Maine Chess Player of the Year Current Standings
10.25.2025 The Maine Chess Player of the Year is a yearlong competitive series. Players earn points based on their performance in various tournaments held within the state of Maine throughout the year. Here are the current standings through October.

We are progressing through the yearlong Maine Chess Player of the Year competition. The current standings are:
1st place: Tobias Coffey with 20.8 points
2nd place: Will Ravn with 20.2 points
3rd place: Wyatt Hendrix with 18.5 points
There are still two and a half months left to earn points and several tournaments eligible. Any public tournament taking place in Maine, advertised in advance on ChessMaine.net, and has any section higher than 1000 is eligible for points. Each player's top five tournaments of the year count towards their total, so there is still competition for coveted 1st place ranking.

Hi Isaiah,
The rules for CPY are here: https://chessmaine.net/chessmaine/2008/05/maine-chess-player-of-the-year-2.html
Your intuition about non-integer scores is correct. Because most events in Maine are 4 rounds, we normalize 5+ round events to a maximum of 5 points (1 point for participation, and 4 for score). For instance, the Maine Championship is 5 rounds. If someone scores 4/5, they will get 4 * (4/5) = 3.2 points from score, plus 1 point for participating, or 4.2 CPY points in total from the event.
To your second point, I don't think tournament directors have ever earned CPY points in any iteration of the program. It's a bit tough to figure out how that would work. CPY has always been a balance between rewarding players for both participating in a lot of events, and scoring well in as many as possible. So if winning an event with 4/4 earns you 5 points, performing in the middle with 2/4 earns you 3, and participating but losing every game earns you 1, it's tough to figure out how many a TD would earn having not played any games. If you (or anyone) has suggestions about how to include TDs in future iterations of CPY, or any other way to support TDs, please reach comment and/or reach out to anyone on the MECA board

Hi,
I'm a bit confused on two things: First, how can anyone have a non .5 decimal score? Draws give half a point, but no other match result gives a non-whole number. Does it have to do with converting scores from tournaments that have more than 4 rounds?
Second, I thought I'd read somewhere that directing and helping host a tournament earns points too. If that's not the case, can we start giving participation points for hosting MCPY events at least? I feel kind of left out having played in 2 tournaments this year but having hosted an additional 3 so far.
Thanks for the post. It's pretty cool we're doing Maine Chess Player of the Year again.
