Thanks to Dan Monahan for contributing to this report.
Thanks to everyone who came out for Saturday's National Chess Day tournament at the Ellsworth Public Library. We had a HUGE turnout - 65 players plus dozens of supporters and spectators. Kids and adults from across the area and around the state competed for fun and bragging rights through several rounds of chess. Much socializing and many delicious snacks were also enjoyed!
A BIG thank you to the Ellsworth Public Library for hosting the tournament and First National Bank for providing funding for trophies! These incredible partners made it possible for this event to be FREE to all players. Congrats to the Ellsworth Chess Club for hosting their first chess tournament in years and to Sam Winter and Jessica Alexander for directing their first tournament as official US Chess Federation tournament directors. Great job by all!
Congratulations to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, respectively, in each section or mini-tournament: Tobias Coffey, Kody McGregor, & Gary Newton (Open Rated Section [most advanced players]); Rebecca Stanley, Webster Stone, and Daniel Powell-Hsu (Rated Under 1000); Arlo Faragher Houghton, Levi Viel, and Elam Monahan (Rated Under 600); Ray Strout, Madelynn Lawrence, and Sadie Monahan (Rated Under 300, Pk-8th graders only); and Sam Diefenbach, David Dilena, and Ben Segee (Non-Rated section).
All players, who are US Chess members, should have received an email with their updated rating and a link to this tournament results cross-table here: Tournament Results Cross Table. This table will show who you played and the result and your new or updated US Chess Federation rating. Keep in mind that the top players in the world are rated around 2700. If you have any questions about interpreting the information let us know.
For the Non-Rated section, full results are attached including the standings and a separate cross-table page.
If you played in a non-rated section and want to play in US Chess rated tournaments and get a rating in the future, you can get a US Chess Federation membership online at uschess.org or, for students (PreK-12th graders), you can get a half price $12 membership through a voucher purchased from the Maine Chess Association. For more about scholastic $12 membership vouchers see US Chess Federation Membership Instructions.pdf or contact us for more info.
There are a couple more tournaments coming up in our area. The Morin Memorial Tournament will be in November at UMaine in Orono and the 20th Annual Aurora Winter Solstice tournament will be in December in Aurora. As always, check out chessmaine.net/events for a full list of upcoming tournaments around Maine.
