Greater Portland Classical Summer League Report

09.21.25 The Greater Portland Classical Summer League was played over the summer of 2025 and ran from June-August. The idea behind this tournament was to have a classical round robin where players would arrange to meet and play their games on their own time at an agreed-upon location of their choosing (the UNE Library in Portland ended up being a popular choice) over the course of several months. That way players who might have otherwise been unable to play in tournaments due to scheduling conflicts/busy lives had an opportunity to play rated classical games against other players from around Southern Maine.

Wyatt Hendrix won the 2025 Greater Portland Classical Summer League Series with a perfect score of five wins in five games.

Thanks to Will Ravn for contributing to this report.

Six players participated and the agreed upon time control was G60+5.  In a strong field, MECA President and 2024 Maine Chess Player of the Year Wyatt Hendrix emerged victorious with a perfect 5/5.  In a 3-way tie for 2nd place with 3/5 were David Cimato, Will Ravn, and Hayden Tittle.  I am planning to run another classical league this winter starting in November and running through February and I invite anyone interested in participating to reach out to me, Will Ravn, at willeravn@gmail.com.  However, I would recommend that only players within a reasonable distance of the Portland area (30-40 min away or less) participate, otherwise the difficulty of players arranging to meet and play their games becomes too great.  I would also stress that only players committed to playing all of their games should participate in the league in order to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to play as many games as possible.
