Second Sunday Standard in Lubec Tournament Report

03/08/25 The Lubec Chess Club continues to promote chess by offering opportunities to learn and play in Lubec and Washington County, Maine. A new series of monthly tournaments is being offered on Sundays at the Lubec Memorial Library alternating monthly between 5-round double Swiss G/3+2 and 3-round standard time control (G/45+5) tournaments. This month's edition was the Second Sunday Standard tournament. Nine players turned out despite monsoon-like rains to compete in an intimate tournament with the feel of an international invitational that was both challenging and highly enjoyable. Here's the illustrated tournament report.

Chess players in the crucible of tournament chess competition at the Second Sunday Standard tournament played on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at the Lubec Memorial Library.

>> US Chess Crosstable of this event <<

Thanks to all who participated and to those who make these events possible. A big thank you to Nancy Briggs and the Lubec Memorial Library for letting us use the beautiful library space for our tournaments.

Rafi Hopkins was one of four players who put up 2.0 points in three games to take shared first place. The others were:

Tobias Coffey

Chris Crittenden and...

Niek Luuring.

Alba (Hoty) Briggs assesses his position while on the move.

Church pastor, clam digger, and chess player David Glidden

Harold (Rik) Michaud played in his first US Chess rated tournament as did...

New Jersey native and Lubec resident Jack O'Neill.

Thanks to Rik Michaud for bringing his beautiful antique chess set and board acquired in Istanbul, Turkey over 30 years ago.

The tournament director was very gracious in not playing the final round when another point could have given him clear first or a tie for first .

Good Job Dan
